The lasting image of the game: M#30 making an interception.
| Oh, what a heartbreak. Even after losing their starting QB on the second play of the game and giving up five interceptions, the Islanders still had a chance to win with just a few minutes left in the game but a costly turnover handed the victory to the visitors instead. After beating their regional rivals from Valleyfield in convincing fashion the week before, the Islanders were full of confidence coming into their traditional Open House game and they showed it right from the beginning when they surprised the visitors with an on-side kick that was recovered by I#40. The Islanders offense then got a first down at the Nomades 38-yd line but on the second play of the game calamity struck as the Islanders’ QB was sacked and suffered an injury that forced him to come out of the game. On the next two plays the offense was only able to gain five yards and they had to punt the ball away. Both teams then traded punts after which the visitors appeared poised to score the first points of the game when they got a first down at the Islanders’ 27-yd line but they could only gain eight yards after that and they turned the ball over on downs. After punting the ball on their next possession, the Islanders got the ball back again on a turnover, this time a fumble recovery, and they put together a 9-play, 95-yd drive that finished with a 10-yd TD run by I#7 that gave them the initial 7-0 lead early in the second quarter (I#16 convert kick). The Nomades, however, responded immediately with their own 10-play, 92-yd scoring drive that finished with a 7-yd TD catch by M#81 to tie the game at 7-7 (M#32 convert kick). Even though the next two Islanders possessions were cut short by interceptions, the home team increased their lead to 12-7 at the half time break thanks to a safety conceded by the Nomades and a 26-yd field goal by I#16. The score did not change in the third quarter as both teams turned the ball over twice and the crowd of 500+ spectators had to wait until the beginning of the fourth quarter when the visitors put together an 11-play, 66-yd scoring drive that put them in front for the first time in the game by a score of 13-12 (convert kick missed). After both teams exchanged turnovers, the next time the Islanders offense went on the field midway through the fourth quarter they made a change at the QB position with I#15 now at the helm. That move seemed to motivate the players and they executed a 7-play, 77-yd drive that finished with a 20-yd TD catch by I#28, who also caught the 2-pt convert to give the Islanders a 20-13 lead with less than six minutes to play. Just like they did earlier in the game, however, the Nomades responded immediately with a scoring drive of their own, this time moving 69 yards in nine plays, finishing with an 8-yd TD catch by M#16 to tie the game at 20-20 (M#32 convert kick). Islanders offense then went out on the field starting from their own 11-yd line with 2:23 left on the clock and they moved steadily towards the visitors end zone to set up for a field goal but with barely a minute left on the clock, an Islanders receiver fumbled the ball while trying to gain extra yards and the M#33 recovered it at the Islanders 39-yd line. The Nomades then ran four quick plays to get to the 7-yd line before M#32 kicked the game winning field goal with just 12 seconds left. The Islanders have a bye during the weekend of Sep. 25-26 and their next game will be on Saturday, Oct. 2 at home against the Outaouais Griffons. |
