(13 h)  Cégep de Thetford 8 vs John Abbott College Islanders 28
(séries éliminatoires / playoffs)
(terrain/field: Memorial Field, John Abbott College, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC)

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The John Abbott College Islanders took advantage of their opponents’ mistakes, scoring 17 points after getting the ball on turnovers, and they won the game 28-8 to earn a spot in the division 2 Bol d’Or championship game for the third year in a row. However, they will not be playing against the Valleyfield Noir et Or as most people had expected and instead their opponents will be the Lynx from Cégep Édouard-Montpetit.

The Islanders got off to a great start. Their defense first forced their opponents to go three-and-out on the opening drive and when the offense went on the field, it only took one play, a 36-yd TD run by Elijah Williams, for the home team to take a quick 7-0 lead (Troy Lendvay convert kick).

The visitors, however, responded immediately on the ensuing possession. Starting from their own 4-yd line, they used a combination of short passes in the flat and runs to move 106 yards in 16 plays, finishing with a 1-yd run by Jonathan Fournier to even the score at 7-7 (Clément Chevalier convert kick).

It looked like the scoring would continue when the Islanders offense went back on the field as they quickly moved to the Thetford 30-yd line but the next play resulted in an interception by Yani Gouadfel just five yards from the end zone that snuffed out the scoring threat. Both teams then got into penalty trouble and the next three possessions all ended with punts. Half way through the second quarter John Abbott was finally able to mount a scoring drive, going 37 yards in 8 plays, finishing with a 32-yd field goal by Lendvay that put the Islanders back in front 10-7.

The Filons offense then went back to what worked for them at the start of the game and started to mix short passes and runs and they got as far as mid field, but they fumbled the ball and Ashton Miller-Melançon recovered it for John Abbott with 1:26 left to play in the first half. The mistake proved costly for the Thetford team as the Islanders ran three quick plays, the last one a 30-yd TD catch by Lendvay that increased their lead to 17-7 at the half time break (Lendvay also kicked the convert).

The third quarter saw the two teams mirror each other with punts and interceptions but the only scoring was a single point for the Filons when a John Abbott punt returner was tackled in the end zone. The Islanders finally were able to increase their lead to 20-8 at the start of the 4th quarter thanks to a 30-yd field goal by Lendvay after they got the ball thanks to an interception by Jeremy Morin.

After a single by Lendvay made the score 21-8 for the home team, the Islanders appeared poised to score more points on their next possession when they moved 81 yards in 6 plays all the way to the Thetford 9-yd line but they fumbled the ball and it was recovered by David Campeau-Desmeules. However, on the first play of the ensuing drive by the Filons, Miller-Melançon got the ball right back for the Abbott offense when he intercepted a pass at the Thetford 42-yd line. It then took the Islanders seven plays before Shawn Valentine got into the end zone on a 1-yd run to make the final score 28-8.

The Filons got the ball back with 1:47 left to play in the game and they got all the way to the Islanders 24-yd line but once again they turned the ball over, this time on a fumble recovered by Khaldon Maghrby that sealed the victory for John Abbott.

The Islanders will now travel to the Cégep de Thetford, where all the Bol d’Or games are being held this year, to play for the division 2 championship on Friday, November 15 at 7:00 pm, hoping that third time will be the charm.

(18 h)  Ile-Perrot Western Patriotes midget 13 @ Victoriaville 0
(Coupe LFMM / MMFL Cup)
(terrain/field: Stade Alphonse-Desjardins, St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC)

In the second installment of the "how the other half of the football world lives" series I attended the MMFL Cup game, which is like the Jack Simpson Cup game in the QMFL, between the Ile-Perrot Western Patriotes and the Victoriaville Vicas.

The Western Patriotes were much better able to adjust their game plan to deal with the adverse weather conditions, which had strong, cold wind blowing from one end zone to the other, to control the game and to win the MMFL Cup. The Ile-Perrot team was not only able to balance their offense between runs and passes but they also minimized turnovers, giving the ball away on only two of their twelve possessions while the Victoriaville Vicas committed seven turnovers on 11 possessions.

After forcing the Western Patriotes to punt on the opening drive, the Vicas appeared poised to score the first points of the game when they attempted a 40-yd field goal with the wind in their backs but the ball was blocked by W#11 and recovered by W#52. The two teams then traded possessions, with the Vicas actually showing an advantage over the Ile-Perrot team as they gained more yards and held a 2:1 advantage in terms of time of possessions but they could not move closer then the 38-yd line of the Western Patriotes.

With 1:17 left to play in the first half, Ile-Perrot offense went back on the field starting near mid field and even though they were playing into the wind, they were able to gain yards with quick passing plays, finishing the drive with a 21-yd catch-and-run play by W#8 to take a 7-0 lead at the half time break (W#3 convert kick).

The start of the second half was a good indicator of the things to come as the Vicas fumbled the ball on the kickoff return and W#11 recovered it. However, the Western Patriotes could not take advantage of the turnover and they punted the ball away, but the Vicas then went three-and-out and punted it right back. Ile-Perrot then needed just one play, a 29-yd run by W#15 to score a TD that increased their lead to 13-0 (convert kick failed).

Even though most of the play after that took place on the Western Patriotes side of the field, Victoriaville could not mount any scoring threat and they turned the ball over on three of their four possessions. The Vicas got the ball for the last time with 1:09 left to play in the game at their own 4-yd line but they could only gain 20 yards before the clock ran out to seal the win for the Western Patriotes.

During the trophy presentation, V#11 was named as the outstanding player of the game for the Vicas while W#15 received the same distinction for the Western Patriotes.
