La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Only about 30-40 die-hard fans showed up to watch the game that has become an annual ritual – the Stallions and the Raiders playing in the Jack Simpson Cup playoffs. The only difference was that this time it was a semi-final game instead of the championship match.

On a wet field and with a constant drizzle, the conditions were ideal for the type of football that has always characterized the Chateauguay Raiders – their smash mouth ground attack – and they took full advantage of it.

Stallions went on offense first starting from their own 42-yd line but they only ran four plays and they turned the ball over on downs at their own 31-yd line. Three plays later, the Raiders scored the first TD of the game on a 15-yd run by R#23 that, as it turned out, gave them all the points they would need to win the game.
The Chateauguay offense got the ball seven more times during the game and they scored touchdowns on all but one of those occasions.
Their defense added two more TDs, one on a 70-yd INT return and the other on a fumble recovery in the end zone, to make the final score 57-0 for the home team.

The Raiders will now face Les Gaulois de Gatineau, to whom they lost 13-14 at the end of the regular season, for their 4th consecutive Jack Simpson Cup championship.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. As the game was drawing to a close, it looked like the John Abbott College Islanders were finally going to beat their rivals from Valleyfield. After being behind the Noir et Or almost the entire game, they had scored a touchdown to take a 37-33 lead with only 51 seconds left on the clock. Then, 29 seconds later they got the ball back at the Valleyfield 23-yd line and all they had to do was to run out the clock, but in the most unexpected and unusual circumstances they turned the ball over and Valleyfield was able to score the winning points in the most improbable way to keep their perfect record against John Abbott intact.

To borrow a quote from Dennis Green, the Valleyfield Noir et Or “are who we thought they were”. The leopard has not changed its spots. They are a ball control team that runs a lot of plays. In this game, they ran 82 plays compared to 48 for John Abbott, they had the ball for more than 2/3 of the playing time and, as it was quite expected, they drew many penalties, 19 for 179 yards to be specific. It seemed, however, that this time the Islanders defense were well prepared for their opponents.

With standing room only crowd of about 800-900 spectators looking on, the game started innocently enough, with Valleyfield going on offense first but being forced to punt after running eight plays and John Abbott responding with a punt when they went on offense. The next Valleyfield series, however, would provide a sense of the things to come. On the 4th play of the drive, Valleyfield were facing a 3rd down and 2 yards to gain situation. The QB threw a short pass but instead of hitting a Noir et Or receiver the ball hit a John Abbott defender. It looked like the pass was going to be intercepted but instead the ball bounced off the Islander player straight into the hands of V#88 for a first down. 10 plays later, V#10 scored the first points of the game on a QB sneak to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

After an exchange of punts, John Abbott went back on offense and they needed just three quick plays, the last one a 25-yd catch by J#1, to level the score at 7-7. The following two series finished again with punts but the next time Valleyfield got the ball they used eight plays to move 97 yards, finishing with a 6-yd TD catch by V#87 to regain the lead at 14-7 which did not change until the half time break.

The character of the game changed completely in the second half. The Islanders went on offense first and they needed only five plays to score a touchdown on a 31-yd run by J#1 to even the score at 14-14. However, the Noir et Or responded immediately in their own style, a 15-play, 83-yd effort that took 8 minutes off the game clock and finished with a 4-yd TD run by V#10 to go back in front 21-14. The Valleyfield offense did not get much rest, though, and they had to go back out on the field after the Islanders fumbled the ball on their first play from scrimmage on the ensuing possession. Luckily for JAC, their defense limited the damage to a field goal that gave the visitors a 10-point lead. The Islanders offense then redeemed itself on their next possession with a quick 5-play scoring drive that finished with a 29-yd TD catch by J#1 that narrowed the gap to 24-21 at the end of the 3rd quarter. After the Valleyfield team responded with an 11-play, 55-yd drive that finished with a 31-yd field goal by V#56 and which made the score 27-21, history repeated itself as the Islanders offense turned the ball over again on their first play from scrimmage, this time with an interception by V#26. Starting at the JAC 8-yd line, the visitors then needed only two plays to score a TD on a 2-yd run by V#6 that made the score 33-21 (2-pt convert attempt failed). Once again, however, the Islanders offense redeemed itself, this time scoring a TD on a 25-yd catch by J#88 that made the score 33-28.

After forcing the Noir et Or to concede a safety on their ensuing possession, the Islanders then took a page out of their opponents’ playbook and put together a 10-play, 72-yd drive where they converted on a 4th down and 9 yards to go situation and finished with a 10-yd TD run by J#2 that gave them the lead for the first time in the game at 37-33 with only 51 seconds left to play in the game. The Valleyfield team then went on offense starting from its own 34-yd line but on their second play, they fumbled the ball and J#32 recovered it. There were only 29 seconds left on the clock and all the Islanders had to do was to line up in the “victory formation”, snap the ball and let the clock run out. Unfortunately, they fumbled the ball on the snap and Valleyfield recovered it at their own 23-yd line with only 26 seconds left to play. On their first play, the Islanders defense forced the QB to scramble but he still managed to throw a pass that was caught by V#36 for a first down at the JAC 41-yd line. Then, with only 13 seconds left, the Valleyfield QB was again forced to throw a desperation pass towards the end zone. The ball hung up in the air and a JAC defender appeared ready to make the interception but instead the ball bounced off his hands straight towards a Noir et Or receiver V#1 who made the easy catch and walked into the end zone to score the winning TD. Jubilation amongst the Valleyfield fans and players, complete disbelief and devastation on the Islanders side.

John Abbott received the kickoff with 5 seconds left on the clock and they tried a few lateral passes but in the end an Islander player got tackled in the end zone to give Valleyfield an extra two points that made the final score 42-37.

Les Spartans n'avaient que 17 joueurs. Les Stallions n'en avaient que 22, mais c'était plus que le minimum de 20 exigé par le Livre Vert. Les deux équipes ont joué un sort de jamboree.. The Spartans only had 17 players. Stallions only had 22 players but that was more than the minimum 20 that is required by the Green Book. Both teams ended up playing a controlled scrimmage.
