(16 h) Etobicoke Eagles 30 vs Cornwall Wildcats 43
(terrain/field: Joe St. Denis Field, Cornwall ON)

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. When the Etobicoke Eagles scored a touchdown at the start of the 4th quarter to take a 30-22 lead it looked like the Cornwall Wildcats were going to be the victims of the ultimate irony – being beaten by a team using a wildcat offense. However, they responded with three touchdowns of their own to come out with a 43-30 victory in large part thanks to a passing game that was working well and a defense that contributed two touchdowns that proved to be the margin of victory.

The home team got off to a good start on their first possession, moving 36 yards in 6 plays to get to the Eagles 42-yd line but their drive stalled there and they came away with only a single point from a punt that an Etobicoke player could not run out of the end zone. After getting the ball back from the Eagles on a turnover on downs, the Wildcats turned it over right back on an interception and the visitors made them pay by needing just two plays to score a TD on an 8-yd run by E#1 to take a 6-1 lead (2-pt convert failed). The Wildcats responded immediately, however, and scored their first TD of the game on a 36-yd catch-and-run play by C#25 to go back in front 8-6 (C#3 convert kick).

Early in the 2nd quarter the Wildcats increased their lead to 15-6, after getting the ball at the Etobicoke 15-yd line when the Eagles turned it over on downs following a bad snap on a punt attempt, and scoring a TD on a 15-yd catch by C#25 (C#3 convert kick). The Eagles, however, showed that they could also respond quickly and scored a TD on the ensuing possession on a 61-yd catch-and-run play by E#7 to make the score 15-12 (2-pt convert failed). After forcing the Wildcats to punt, the Eagles then closed out the first half scoring with a second TD by E#7, this time on a 22-yd catch, to take an 18-15 lead at the break.

Etobicoke went on offense at the start of the 2nd half but it was the Wildcats who scored points as C#24 intercepted a pass at his own 30-yd line and weaved his way through the Eagles players to the end zone to put the Wildcats back in front 22-18 (C#3 convert kick). But, in a pattern that was clearly developing, that prompted the other team to respond and the Eagles did exactly that, going 47 yards in five plays, finishing with a 28-yd TD catch by who else but E#7 to make the score 24-22 for the visitors.

After another exchange of punts, Cornwall went back on offense from their own 13-yd line but on the second play of their drive, they fumbled the ball and the Eagles recovered it at the 24-yd line. Three plays later, E#1 increased the Etobicoke lead to 30-22 with a TD on a 5-yd carry (2-pt convert failed again) at the start of the 4th quarter. Once again, however, the Wildcats responded right away with a 7-play, 58-yd drive that finished with a 33-yd TD catch by C#82 that narrowed the Etobicoke lead to 30-28 (2-pt convert attempt failed).

The Wildcats defense then forced the Eagles to go two-and-out and their offense then went on the field at their opponents’ 25-yd line thanks to a 30-yd punt return by C#2. After that, they only needed three plays for C#10 to get into the end zone on a 1-yd QB sneak to give his team a 35-30 lead that they would never relinquish.

The Eagles then got the ball back at their own 23-yd line with 4:03 left to play in the game. They used six consecutive running plays to move the ball to the Wildcats 53-yd line but, on a 3rd down and 2 play, they lined up in a shotgun formation, the ball was fumbled on the snap and C#5 was right there to scoop it up and run 50 yards for a TD to increase the Wildcats lead to 42-30. The final point of the game was scored on the ensuing kickoff when the Eagles returner let the ball bounce through the end zone. Etobicoke still had 1:15 left on the clock to try to score some points and they were starting from their own 45-yd line, but they were only able to run three plays before the clock ran out.

The Wildcats will play their final regular season game at home on Saturday, July 13 starting at 4:00 pm against the 0-7 Quinte Skyhawks. Playoffs will start on July 20.
