La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The bantam Stallions finally managed to get their first win of the season by taking advantage of their opponents’ mistakes and penalties.

It didn’t look like that at the start of the game because just as it would happen with their midget counterparts a few hours later, the visitors executed a host kick on the kickoff and then recovered the ball. Spartans offense then went on the field starting at the Stallions 50-yd line and in six plays had a fist down just one yard outside the end zone. It looked inevitable that they would score a touchdown. Well, nothing could be further from the truth because on the first down play they had a five yard penalty called against them. Now they were six yards from the end zone. Then, on their second attempt on the first down play, they were pushed back by the Stallions defense to the 11-yd line. On second down, they went four yards backwards, three yards further back on the third down and when they finally went for it on 4th down they were pushed back to more yards and they turned the ball over on downs.

The two teams then exchanged possessions twice before Stallions were finally able to take advantage of Spartans’ mistakes after St#55 recovered a fumble and returned it to the St-Laurent 12-yd line. Four plays later, St#80 scored the first TD of the game with a 6-yd catch in the end zone to put the home team ahead 6-0 (2-pt convert attempt failed). The ensuing Spartans possession ended again in a turnover, this time a fumble recovered by St#25, and once again Stallions offense took advantage of the mistake by scoring a quick TD with a 21-yd catch by St#81 to increase their lead to 12-0 at the half time break.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Stallions took advantage of another St-Laurent turnover to increase their lead to 18-0 before the Spartans finally managed to score a TD with less than four minutes left in the game to close the gap to 18-6.

No player stood out on offense but on defense St#25 and St#52 with one fumble recovery each, St#33, St#50 and St#77 combining to make four sacks while St#81 led the team with the most tackles.

(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S., St-Lazare, QC)

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. It’s eerie how similar this game was compared to the first encounter between these two teams in Ottawa earlier in the season. In the first game, Stallions carried most of the play but they only had two TDs to show for it and the winning margin was a missed convert.

In this game, Stallions again carried most of the play, gained a lot more first downs and had a big advantage in the time of possession but they just couldn’t finish their drives and on three occasions they turned the ball over on downs.

The first offensive series of the game was a good preview of how things would turn out for the Stallions. They started from their own 28-yd line and in 15 plays had a first down at the Raftsmen 34-yd line. However, in the next four plays they could only gain nine yards and they ended up turning the ball over on downs. The two teams then traded possessions until the half time break with the score tied 0-0.

At the start of the second half the Raftsmen went three-and-out on their first drive and Stallions offense got the ball at the Orleans 26-yd line after a 29-yd punt return by S#1. Four plays later, Stallions got the first points of the game when S#43 scored a TD on an 8-yd catch-and-run play to take a 6-0 lead (convert kick blocked).

Stallions offense didn’t get much chance to rest, however, because on the first play from scrimmage by the Raftsmen on the ensuing drive their QB fumbled the ball and S#43 recovered it. Seven plays later Stallions were faced with a 4th and 1 at the Orleans 16-yd line. They went for the sure play and handed the ball off to S#22 but R#21 and R#56 broke through the Stallions o-line and tackled the St-Lazare ball carrier at the line of scrimmage to force another turnover on downs.

The Orleans offense then went on the field and after a short run and an incomplete pass, their QB threw a pass to R#89 who caught it near mid field and then outran the Stallions defenders all the way to the end zone to put his team ahead 7-6 (R#4 convert kick). That was the only good play that the Raftsmen executed all game long but it turned out to be the only one that they needed as they were then able to protect their lead until the end of the game.

Stallions only got the ball two more times after that and they punted on the first possession and turned the ball over on downs on the second one.

On offense, S#22 had another good game with 110 yards on 17 carries while on defense S#43 and S#81 led with the most tackles.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. It’s a really crazy game this football thing. Take the game between the Stallions and the Spartans, please! During the first half, the rain was coming down in biblical proportions yet Stallions were able to move the ball and score some points. All 22 of them, in fact. On the other hand, during the second half, when the playing conditions were almost ideal after the skies had cleared and the weather became very pleasant, neither team was able to score a single point. Go figure!

Stallions got off to a bad start as the Spartans surprised them with a short kickoff and recovered the ball at the Stallions 51-yd line. However, they could only advance 20 yards and they turned the ball over on downs. Stallions offense then went on the field and put together an 18-play, 59-yd drive that took more than 10 minutes off the clock but they only got one point to show for it when their 27-yd field goal attempt sailed wide right and the Spartans returner was not able to run it out of the end zone.

The Spartans turned the ball over on their next three possessions and Stallions made them pay each time by scoring a TD to take a 22-0 lead at the half time break. In the second half, Spartans came close to scoring on one occasion when they had a first down just seven yards from the end zone but they fumbled the ball and S#41 recovered it. Stallions, in fact, were so confident that they could stop the Spartans from scoring that at one point in the 3rd quarter they went for it on 4th and 7 at their own 18-yd line. They only got 6.5 of the necessary seven yards and turned the ball over on downs but the Spartans could only gain one yard on their ensuing four next plays and Stallions got the ball back at their own 24-yd line.

On offense, S#22 stood out with 112 yards on 13 carries while on defense, S#21 and S#41 contributed with one fumble recovery each.

(13 h) CEGEP de Sherbrooke 15 vs John Abbott College Islanders 37
(terrain/field: Memorial Field, John Abbott College, Ste-Anne-de-Belleveue, QC)

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The visiting Sherbrooke Volontaires scored the first and the last points of the game but the Islanders scored 37 points of their own in between to earn their second win of the season.

John Abbott went on offense first but they could only gain two yards and they were forced to punt. Kicking from their own 23-yd line into a strong breeze, the ball only traveled 29 yards. The Volontaires' returner only managed to gain 5 yards on the return but combined with a no-yards penalty against John Abbott, the visitors were able to start their first offensive drive from the Islanders 42-yd line. They then only needed four plays to score the first points of the game on a 20-yd TD catch by V#10 for a 7-0 lead (V#39 convert kick). The 7-0 lead became 8-0 on the ensuing kickoff when I#18 wasn't able to bring the ball out of the end zone and Sherbrooke got credited with a rouge.

After the two teams traded punts, John Abbott offense went started their third drive of the game from their own 43-yd line. They then used an equal mix of three runs and three passes to move 67 yards, finishing with a 33-yd TD catch by I#15 to make the score 8-7 (I#28 convert kick). After forcing the Volontaires to go three-and-out on their next possession, John Abbott offense got into the end zone again, this time on a 10-play, 72-yd drive that finished with a 1-yd run by I#3 to put them in front 14-8.

Similar turn of events unfolded again with the Islanders defense forcing the visitors to punt and then the offense moving the ball towards their opponents' end zone. It only took two plays for the Islanders to get a first down just one yard from the goal and another touchdown looked imminent but the Volontaires defense held their ground and the Islanders had to settle for an 11-yd field goal to increase their lead to 17-8.

The story was repeating itself again on the next round of possessions, with the Volontaires punting and the Islanders threatening to score but this time the threat was extinguished just 11 yards from the end zone by an interception after a pass attempt was tipped at the line of scrimmage. However, the Islanders still got two points out of the deal when Sherbrooke conceded a safety on their ensuing drive to make the score 19-8.
The Islanders offense got the ball two more times and they scored a TD on each occasion to make the score 33-8 at the halftime break.

The scoring flurry subsided in the second half as turnovers and penalties nullified several promising offensive series by the two teams but thanks to a rouge and a 12-yd field goal, the Islanders were able to increase their lead to 37-8. Near the end of the game both teams started playing some of their backups and the Volontaires took advantage of the opportunity to score a TD on a 15-yd catch by V#23 with only 2:20 left on the clock to make the final score 33-15.

Both teams will have to cut down drastically on the number of penalties, however. In this game, the Volontaires were assessed 19 penalties for 182 yards while the Islanders had 17 called against them for 162 yards.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. For a few minutes it looked like the Stallions might actually score some points against the mighty Lions. How couldn’t they? After the Lions scored their 5th TD of the game to take a 31-0 lead with 35 seconds left to play in the first half, S#50 picked up the ball at his own 29-yd line on the ensuing kickoff and managed to return it all the way to the Lions 16-yd line. The referees then assessed a major penalty against North Shore which gave the Stallions a first down at the 1-yd line with 25 minutes seconds still left on the clock. Stallions then had three cracks at the end zone, choosing a running play each time, but they only ended up getting pushed back by the Lions’ d-line and they came away empty handed.

With the clock running during the second half, North Shore put up two more TDs on four drives while the Stallions went on offense three times but they couldn’t mount any offensive threat.

S#50 led the defense with the most tackles and a blocked convert kick while S#77 blocked three of them.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The Sherbrooke Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and gained 14 yards and a FD on the first play from scrimmage but then they lost yards on each one of the next four plays and they ended up conceding a safety to give the Stallions a quick 2-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, S#22 returned the ball 39 yards to the Bulldogs 31-yd line and three plays later S#80 caught a 12-yd pass in the end zone to increase the lead to 8-0 (convert kick failed).

Only a few minutes later the St-Lazare offense had to go back on the field after S#21 intercepted a pass near mid field and returned it to the Sherbrooke 17-yd line. It looked like the Stallions were going to score some easy points but the Sherbrooke defense held strong and forced them to attempt a 17-yd field goal. Unfortunately for the visitors, the kick sailed wide right and B#25 was able to run it out of the end zone.

The Bulldogs offense then went on the field and started to mode the ball towards the Stallions end zone but once again S#21 put paid to all their efforts by recovering a fumble at the 49-yd line. This time the turnover proved costly for the home team as Stallions put together a 10-play, 61-yd drive that finished with Stallions QB scoring a TD on a 2-yd sneak to increase their lead to15-0. Stallions then executed a perfect short kickoff with S#25 recovering the ball but it was nullified by an offside penalty. The Bulldogs then started a new offensive series from center field and taking advantage of three penalties called against the Stallions, two of them being the major variety, to get a first down just five yards form the end zone. B#88 then swept around the St-Lazare defense to get into the end zone for a TD to make the score 15-6.

After Stallions turned the ball over on their next possession, the Bulldogs went three-and-out and punted from their own 29-yd line with only 15 seconds left in the first half. S#80 fielded the punt near the center of the field and returned it 40 yards to the Bulldogs 14-yd line with only 5 seconds left on the clock, which was just enough for one last play. Instead of trying a field goal, Stallions went for it and scored a touchdown when S#80 caught a pass at the goal line to make the score 21-6 at the half time break.

Stallions scored a quick touchdown at the start of the 2nd half on a 40-yd run by S#22 to increase their lead to 28-6 but the Bulldogs responded with a TD of their own on a 47-yd catch-and-run play by B#12 near the end of the 3rd quarter. Stallions immediately restored their 22-point lead on the ensuing kickoff when S#22 weaved his way through the Bulldogs defense over a course of 80 yards into the end zone. The Bulldogs once again responded, this time with a methodical 10-play, 75-yd drive that finished with B#28 scoring a TD on a 1-yd QB sneak to make the score 35-20.

Stallions defense stopped the Bulldogs on the ensuing drive and S#33 finished the scoring the next time that the St-Lazare offense went on the field with a 15-yd TD catch to make the final score 42-20.

On offense, S#22 stood out with six carries for 112 yards and two TDs while on defense, S#21 contributed with an interception and a fumble recovery, S#81 with a sack while S#10, S#21 and S#41 led with the most tackles.
