(17 h 30) Cégep Lévis-Lauzon Faucons 9 vs Vanier College Cheetahs 31
(terrain/field: Vanier College, St-Laurent, QC)

(19 h) Cégep Beauce-Appalaches Condors 3 vs John Abbott College Islanders 51
(terrain/field: Memorial Field, John Abbott College, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC)

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. After punting on the first drive of the game, the John Abbott College Islanders offense scored a touchdown every time it had the ball in the first half, building up a 37-0 lead at the half time break and then cruising to an easy 51-3 win over the visiting Beauce-Appalaches Condors.

With only one game gone in the season it may be too early to judge, but the Islanders look like a better team than they were in 2015, with a better running and passing game, not to mention eight former Stallions on their roster, while the Condors appear to be a weaker team compared to a year ago.

The Islanders took an early 2-0 when the visitors conceded a safety on their first offensive series but they quickly added to their lead on the ensuing drive, going 75 yards in five plays, finishing with a 6-yd TD run by Kwame Osei that made the score 9-0 (Jacob Tanguay-Austin convert kick).

The Islanders defense then forced the Condors to go three-and-out and punt but Qwintyn Rice fumbled the ball on the return and Adrien Wilmot from Beauce recovered it at the Islanders 24-yd line. The Condors got as close as the 8-yd line but they went for it on 4th and 1 and they were denied by the Islanders defense. That seemed to be the turning point of the game because the home team then responded with a 14-play, 102-yd scoring drive that consumed more than eight minutes off the clock and finished with a 29-yd TD catch by a former Stallion Jérémy Comeau and which increased their lead to 16-0 (convert kick by Tanguay-Austin).

Beauce punted on their next three drives, during which their total net offensive production was -3 yards, while the Islanders scored a TD each time they went on offense and the score at the half time break was 37-0.

In the second half, the Islanders were not as efficient and they only scored points on two of their four drives: 3 on a 37-yd field goal by Tanguay-Austin and 6 more on a 1-yd run by another former Stallion Tabari Yearwood. The Condors scored their only points on the last play of the game when Nathan Bolduc kicked a 20-yd field goal as time expired.

(9 h) Sunnybrooke Bombers 44 vs Stallions Pee-wee 36
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S., St-Lazare, QC)

La traduction est en cours. Désolé.
The Sunnybrooke Bombers are probably wishing that the playing time for pee-wee teams was also reduced to 12 minutes per quarter just like for the bantam and midget teams.

They were leading 32-22 at the start of the 4th quarter but with only 18 players on the team (Stallions had 26), playing under a blazing sun in 25 deg.C weather on a hot artificial surface, they were running out of gas and Stallions took advantage of it, scoring two touchdowns to take a 36-32 lead.

However, Sunnybrooke got the ball back with less than four minutes left to play in the game, converted on a 4th down and 15 yards to go, and they scored a TD to retake the lead by two points 38-36.

Stallions offense then went back into action with less than two minutes left and they got into the red zone, but on the last play of the game, with no time left on the clock, their pass into the end zone was intercepted by a Sunnybrooke player at the goal line and returned 110 yards for a pick-6 touchdown that made the final score 44-36.

2016_bantam_08-20_game_stats.gif

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. With only 20 players on their roster and no passing game at all, the Laval-Nord Scorpions did not provide much opposition to the home team.

Stallions scored a touchdown each time they had the ball in the first half, taking advantage of five Laval-Nord turnovers to build up a 40-1 lead at the half time break. Then, with the clock running in the second half, Stallions added one more touchdown on a 40-yd punt return to make the final score 47-1.

Stallions QB had an outstanding game, scoring one TD and completing 14 passes on 21 attempts to seven different receivers for a total of 196 yards. St#6, who did not play a week earlier against St-Laurent, gained 152 yards on 13 carries and scored two TDs.

On defense, the biggest contributions came from St#22 with an interception and St#36 who made two. St#46 recovered a fumble and together with St#48 and St#83 led the defensive effort with the most tackles.

(19 h) Victoriaville Vicas 0 vs Stallions Midget 22
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S., St-Lazare, QC)

2016_midget_08-20_game_stats.gif
La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Judging from their “performance” in the first half of this game, it looked like the Stallions midget team was setting itself up for another loss like they did in the October 2015 game against the Drummondville Vandoos. There, Stallions played very poorly in the first half, falling behind 15-0, before bouncing back with a much better performance in the second half, but it was not enough and they ended up losing 15-11.

However, even though their offensive production in the first half against Victoriaville was lower than last year's against Drummondville (36 yards on 29 plays vs the Vandoos compared to 20 yards on 13 plays vs the Vicas) there was one major difference that helped them win the game this time and that's the number of turnovers. Against Drummondville, they turned the ball over seven times during the game but they did not commit even a single turnover against Victoriaville. In fact, they took advantage of the seven turnovers that the Vicas made to keep them off the scoreboard and win the game 22-0, which was a fitting way to avenge their 20-0 loss to the Vicas at home in the 2015 season. The comparison between the offensive production of both teams is shown below.

production offensive (verges) / offensive production (yards)
1re démie / 1st half 2e démie / 2nd half

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. With playing time reduced to 12 minutes per quarter just like in the bantam league, Stallions went on offense first and after gaining a first down on the first play from scrimmage, they were pushed back three yards on the next three plays and they had to punt. The Vicas then started their first offensive drive from their own 32-yd line and they methodically moved 75 yards in 12 plays until they got a first down just three yards from the Stallions end zone. It looked like it was just a matter of time before they would score a TD. However, on the next three plays they tried a QB sneak but Stallions defense was ready each time and they pushed the Vicas back to the 4-yd line. The visitors went for it on 4th down but they fumbled the ball on the snap and even though they recovered it right away, they turned it over on downs anyway.

Midway through the 2nd quarter, the Vicas threatened again when they got a 1st down at the 14-yd line but once again they came away empty handed and the first half ended in a 0-0 tie.

Victoriaville got the ball first in the 2nd half but on their second play, St#55 intercepted a pass and returned it 34 yards to the Vicas 31-yd line. Four plays later, St#1 caught a 10-yd pass in the end zone and then kicked the convert to give the Stallions a 7-0 lead and, as it turned out, all the points that they would need.

In the 4th quarter, Vicas turned the ball over on each one of their possessions and Stallions took advantage to increase their lead, first with a 17-yd TD catch by St#88 and then with a 43-yd TD run by St#13.

Stallions defense was the story of the game, with St#20 recovering a fumble, St#33 making a sack and St#55 making two interceptions. St#46, St#24 and St#35 made the most tackles.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Two surprises waited for spectators who came to see the game. The first was that the playing time was reduced to 12 minutes per quarter instead of 15 in accordance with new Football Quebec rules, while the second one was that the Spartans canteen was closed, which meant that no one could enjoy their famous hot dogs. One thing that did not come as a surprise to anyone was that the Spartans, just like the Sun Youth Hornets, never seem to have a player who can kick converts, which proved to be a deciding factor in the game because both teams scored three touchdowns, but Stallions were able to convert two of theirs with kicks while the Spartans were forced to go for two-point conversions and they missed on all three attempts.

Just like last season, Stallions turned the ball over on the second play from scrimmage but the Spartans could not take advantage of their mistake. After punting on their next possession, Stallions took the first lead of the game on their third drive when they only needed three plays to go 59 yards, finishing with a 5-yd touchdown run by St#1 for a 7-0 lead (St#13 convert kick). However, the Spartans responded immediately with an impressive 16-play, 85-yd drive that took more than nine minutes off the game clock and finished with a 15-yd TD catch by Sp#16 to make the score 7-6.

A 19-yd TD run by St#83 let the Stallions increase their lead to 14-6 with only 1:28 left in the first half but the Spartans only needed four plays and 52 seconds to go 67 yards for a touchdown that made the score 14-12 at the half time break.

Stallions increased their lead to 20-12 on their first possession in the 3rd quarter but the Spartans narrowed the gap to 20-18 midway through the 4th quarter when they took advantage of a Stallions turnover and scored a touchdown on a 7-yd scramble by their QB.

With less than four minutes left to play in the game, the Spartans offense went back on the field after Stallions turned the ball over near the St-Laurent red zone. However, after gaining 12 yards on their first two plays, Spartans were pushed back to their own 15-yd line because of two consecutive penalties and after fumbling the ball near their own goal line, they were forced to conceded a safety, that made the score 22-18 for the visitors.

Spartans tried to keep the ball with an onside kick but Stallions managed to recover it and after gaining a couple of first downs, they were able to run out the clock and secure their first win of the season.

On offense, Stallions QB stood out with 125 yards on 12 carries, while on defense the players who stood out were St#13 who recovered a fumble, St#35 and St#83, who each had a sack while St#29, St#87 and St#35 made the most tackles.
