October 2012 Archives

During the game between the Stallions bantam team and the St-Bruno Barons a couple of weeks ago I couldn't help overhearing many people talking about the the playoffs. More specifically, the discussions were mostly about the format of the playoffs, which teams play against which other teams and which trophy the teams will be playing for.

In 2009 I posted an article about the formats used for the playoffs in the QMFL and in the QBFL, which can be found here. Since then, the playoff format used by the QMFL has not changed but the QBFL, because of its expansion from 12 teams to 30 teams, has radically changed its playoff system. Because there is no information about this on the league web site and because this kind of information is needed and is very important to a lot of people, I have updated what I posted three years ago and prepared it as separate documents that can be found below. These documents contain a very clear and concise explanation of the playoff systems used by the two leagues and present it in a graphical format that's easy to understand. I hope it is helpful.

Cite-des-Jeunes juvenile team with the 2012 div.2 Group B championship banner

The Citadins juvenile team finished the 2012 football season on a high note by beating the Selwyn House Griffons on home field to win the Lac St-Louis division 2b group B championship.

With the Citadins' strong run offense and their defense, which put a lot of pressure on the Griffons' QB, Cité-de-Jeunes dominated the game from the start of the 2nd quarter and cruised to an easy win. However, it didn't look like it was going to be an easy victory in the 1st quarter after the Citadins had two of their offensive drives end prematurely because of interceptions. Griffons capitalized on one of them to take a 7-0 lead at the start of the 2nd quarter but the Citadins responded immediately to even the score at 7-7 when #25 scored a TD on a 79-yd run on the ensuing drive (#10 kicked the convert).

The Griffons may not have known it then but the game was effectively over for them at that point because without any credible run threat and with their pass offense smothered by the Citadins defensive line, which sacked the Selwyn House QB nine times, they didn't have much chance. To their credit, though, they played hard until the last whistle.

The Citadins took the lead for good with less than two minutes left to play in the 1st half when #3 scored a TD on a 30-yd run and #44 made the 2-pt convert. In the 2nd half, Selwyn House offense was on the field seven times but they were kept off the scoreboard as six of their drives ended with turnovers and they punted once. On the other hand, Cité-des-Jeunes scored nine more points thanks to TD by #56 on a 19-yd run (#10 convert kick) and two rouge scores.

For the Citadins, #25 was the best player on offense with 17 carries for 225 yards and one TD. On defense, many different players made contributions with sacks, interceptions and fumble recoveries. The approximately 250-300 people who attended the game, most of them students, enjoyed a good performance on the football field and a great atmosphere around it.

John Abbott Islanders and cheerleaders celebrate after qualifying for the playoffs

Quel match! The 600-700 people who came to see the Islanders' final regular season game against the Beauce-Appalaches Condors, and the 20 or so mooches who watched from behind the fence near the players' bench, sure got their money's worth. It was an exciting game, with the lead changing hands several times, that was not decided until the final seconds.

Coming into the game both teams had the same objective - win the game and qualify for the final playoff spot. While the Condors have made the playoffs each of the previous three seasons, for John Abbott the last playoff appearance was in 2007.

Even though the Islanders seemed to be outplayed by the Condors judging by a number of different statistical yardsticks such as net yards gained, number of first downs and time of possession, the one statistic that helped them a lot was the number of penalties. John Abbott had only four penalties called against them for 25 yards while Beauce had 11 for 111 yards. Both teams had also committed the same number of turnovers, four, but the ones committed by the Condors were much more costly because on three of their offensive drives they were well within range of an easy points scoring opportunity but they came away empty handed.

Even though the Islanders took a quick 7-0 lead after only three and a half minutes of play on a spectacular 105 punt return TD by Zacary Alexis Beauce did all the scoring from then on and the visitors were leading 18-7 near the end of the 3rd quarter with a 407 to 109 net yards advantage over the home team. However, Islanders offense started to turn things around and put together a 75-yd scoring drive early in the 4th quarter that finished with a 1-yd TD run by Quaid Johnson to narrow the gap to 18-13.

Beauce answered quickly with its own TD to make the score 25-13 but Islanders were not to be outdone and drove 47 yards towards the Condors' end zone and appeared poised to score points but instead turned the ball over on downs near the red zone. After the defense forced the visitors to punt, the offense went back on the field and made up big for its earlier miscue by scoring a TD using play action trickery with a 65-yd catch-and-run play from Jarrett Carson to Mathieu Brunet that made the score 25-20 for Beauce with only 2:43 left to play.

The likelihood of a victory got much better, however, after the next 12 seconds of play when the Condors' powerful running back Pierre Gagnon fumbled the ball at his own 30-yd line and John Abbott's Russell Prevost recovered it and returned it just three yards from the end zone. Two plays later Mario Porreca scored a TD on a 7-yd run to put his team back in front 27-25 with less than two minutes left in the game. Beauce did not throw in the towel, however, and responded with a 4-play, 67-yd drive that finished with a 25-yd TD run by Pierre Gagnon to go back in front 32-27.

But, as it often happens in these situations, they scored too quickly and left 59 seconds on the clock which was more than enough for the Islanders to get into the end zone. They did it in 8 plays covering 57 yards and finished with a 3-yd TD catch by Richard Rafter. With only 11 seconds left on the clock Beauce was still able to run two passing plays but both were incomplete and all the home team supporters were able to breath a huge sigh of relief. A beaming Patrick Gregory was also finally able to enjoy the results of all the hard work that his coaching staff put in during the entire season. The team will now travel to Quebec City to face the team from CEGEP Limoilou and as we know, in the playoffs anything can happen.

Midget team game stats

The midget team's nightmare season finally came to an end.

It didn't have to come to end, the Richelieu team was certainly not overpowering, they only had three more players than the Stallions on their roster, but the Pirates played smart, protected the football and took advantage of the opportunities that the Stallions created for them as a result of their 10 turnovers, which consistently gave Richelieu a short field to work with.

The game started well, with the Stallions using the element of surprise for the third game in a row, kicking short on the opening kickoff and recovering the ball, this time by Jake Adams. One play later, Greg Derfel scored a TD on a 55-yd catch-and-run play (Nicolas Pilon kicked the convert) and just like that Stallions were up 7-0 after only 35 seconds of play.

Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. Richelieu evened the score on the ensuing possession and then increased their lead to 14-7 a few minutes later when their #20 intercepted a pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. With all the turnovers committed by the Stallions, compounded by the 12 penalties which were called against them for 108 yards (8 penalties for 55 yards for Richelieu) the Pirates could hardly help themselves but score points.

Near the end of the 1st half it looked like the game might deteriorate into something similar to the game against the Laval Bulldogs, as players and coaches got into a pushing and yelling contest, but cooler heads prevailed, order was restored and the game was played to its full length.

Other than the 66-yd, 2-catch performance by Gred Derfel on offense, the only other noteworthy performances were the fumble recoveries by Jake Adams and Turell Daye on defense.

Bantam team game stats

By a remarkable coincidence, both the Stallions bantam and midget teams ended up playing their first round playoff games on the road against the same opponent. It was even more remarkable then that the bantam team's game ended up being very similar to the game that the midget team had finished playing only 30 minutes earlier.

Just like the midget team, the bantams scored on their first offensive drive to take a quick 7-0 lead and just like the midget team before, they also ended up losing the game. However, what happened during their game between the first score and the last whistle was completely different. To start, the bantam team seemed to genuinely want to win the game and they played like they were there to win. This was most evident near the end of the 1st half when the Stallions got the ball at their own 52-yd line with only 18 seconds left to play. Trailing 16-7 at the time, they could have just run out the clock and gone into the locker room but instead they surprised their opponents by executing a couple of long passing plays and they scored a touchdown on a 27-yd catch to #5 with no time left on the clock to make the score 16-13.

They got behind 32-13 early in the 4th quarter but again they fought back and narrowed the gap to 32-19 thanks to a 1-yd run by the QB #2 but they got the ball only once after that and they ran out of time. By keeping the number of turnovers to a minimum - they only turned the ball over twice during the twelve offensive series that they started - they were in the game until the end. The only thing that they could have done better was to control their penalties - they had twelve called against them for 103 yards but four of them resulted in Richelieu first downs.

#81 stood out on offense with 103 yards on three catches while on defense, #44 and #79 made the most tackles.

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. After the game against St-Laurent a week earlier, the start of the game against the St-Leonard Cougars felt like dèjà  vu all over.

Stallions surprised their opponents with a short kickoff which was recovered by #5. Then, in four plays they got a first down at the Cougars 26-yd line. However, just like the week before, on the next four plays they couldn't move the ball and they turned it over on downs. The Cougars then used a few running plays and gave the Stallions a taste of their own medicine - the deep ball threat - to quickly get to within five yards of the end zone. From there, it took them three tries before their powerful fullback #3 (19 carries, 180 yards, longest run 45 yards) scored the first of his seven TDs, but they had set their course for the game and they didn't stray from it even one bit.

Once again, only 24 players answered the bell for the Stallions and they kept it close until early in the 2nd quarter when a 52 catch-and-run TD by #78 made the score 17-7 for the home team but St-Leonard's offense exploded for three more TDs before the half time break to put the game away. For the Stallions, the entire game could be summarized in five lines:
  • 11 offensive drives
  • 1 TD
  • 3 punts
  • 7 turnovers
  • other than the recovery of the opening kickoff, the defense did not cause a single St-Leonard turnover
#25 helped the defensive effort with a sack while #11 was the leading tackler.

Last year, the bantam team's fate in the playoffs was determined on the last day of the regular season. The same thing is happening this year. After the first nine games, Stallions are in 5th place in the Earl de la Perralle division standings (ahead of the L-L Bobcats because of the tie-break rules). If we assume that St-Bruno will win its game against St-Laurent, then depending on what happens with the games involving the L-L Bobcats, the Repentigny Rhinos and the Varennes Aigles, Stallions could finish as high as 5th or as low as 7th in the final standings. The big difference between finishing in 5th or 6th place as opposed to finishing in 7th place is that in the first case Stallions would play for the President's Cup as opposed to the QBFL AAA Cup as last year. Here is a breakdown of all the different possibilities.

(16 h) Chateauguay Raiders 22 vs Stallions Bantam 22
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. This game was a mirror image of the game the Stallions played a week earlier against St-Bruno. There, they started slow but improved in the second half while in this game they started strong and built up a quick 15-0 lead but then faded and in the end were lucky to escape with a tie.

In the first half, Stallions offense had the ball eight times and with this they scored two TDs (following Raiders turnovers), punted three times, committed two turnovers and on their last drive, working with only 30 seconds on the clock, they were able to get to within one yard of the Raiders end zone but on the last play of the half they were not able to punch it in and came away empty handed. However, they still had a 15-13 lead against a Chateauguay team that showed up to play with only 23 players because some of their most productive members were apparently not able to play due to hockey obligations. Since there was absolutely nothing riding on the game for Chateauguay, who were guaranteed to finish in second place regardless of what happened on the last day of the regular season, allowing their key players to be excused was not such a bad decision. The defense also played very well and caused five turnovers against the Raiders.

In the second half, though, things changed. The offense got on the field six times but they were only able to score points once, punted once and turned the ball over three times although they still generated plenty of excitement on their last drive when they executed a "hook-and-ladder" play, like the one that the Boise State college football team made famous in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, and they got to within 11 yards of the end zone as time expired. In the end, Stallions could consider themselves fortunate that they ended up with a tie because Chateauguay dominated the 4th quarter and when they evened the score with only 1:03 let to play they could have taken a 23-22 lead with a simple convert kick but instead they decided to go for two points but were stopped by Stallions defense.

Outstanding players on offense were #11 and #36, the first for gaining 145 yards on five catches while the second gained 118 yards on two catches. On defense, #79 stood out again with three interceptions and a fumble recovery while #26 had one interception. #56 and #90 each recovered one fumble. Leading tacklers were #44, #79 and #50.

After the game, the parents and players of the Stallions bantam team,as well as your faithful reporter, enjoyed a great tailgate party to wrap up the 2012 regular season. The food was great, especially the Flinstonian spare ribs, the music was great and the overall atmosphere was even better. Congratulations to all the parents who took the initiative to plan and organize the event, which will hopefully inspire others to do the same thing.

Junior team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. After a close game against the Jr. Raiders a month earlier, Stallions had the right game plan for a better chance to finally beat the Chateauguay team - minimize the number of turnovers and keep the penalties down - and they executed it pretty well. Unfortunately, the Raiders played better than they did the last time the two teams met and once again they were able to come from behind to keep their unbeaten streak in head-to-head games going. While the Stallions only turned the ball over three times in this game and had only eight penalties called against them, compared to two and thirteen respectively in the game on Sep. 22, the Raiders did even better and turned the ball over only once (five times in the first game) and reduced the number of penalties from 15 for 167 yards to 11 and only 84 yards.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth throughout the game with the Raiders going in front first 3-0 on a 42-yd field goal before Maxime Trudeau gave the Stallions the lead thanks to a great 28-yd leaping catch in the end zone (Ashtton Ewers kicked the convert). The Raiders, however, were ahead 10-7 at the half time break thanks to a 2nd quarter TD by Tevyn Nicholls.

In the third quarter, it looked like the lack of discipline might finally prove costly for the Raiders as the Stallions took advantage of two pass interference and one roughing the passer infractions by Chateauguay defense to move 68 yards on five plays and score the go ahead TD on a 1-yd catch by Julian Mangan which put them back in front 14-10.

After giving up a rouge to Chateauguay at the end of the 3rd quarter to make the score 14-11, Stallions were still hanging on to the lead with barely four minutes left to play in the game when the Raiders got the ball at the Stallions 49-yd line and put their running game into overdrive. In four plays Matthew Pompeo got his team 24 yards closer to the end zone before Tevyn Nicholls and Scott Payne took turns to get to the 3-yd line. Pompeo then finished the job with a 3-yd rushing TD to put the home team back in front 18-14.

Stallions offense got the ball back with 1:08 left to play and with great field position thanks to a 45-yd kickoff return by Alex Pilon but the first two plays were incomplete passes and the last gasp effort, 3rd down pass was intercepted by the Raiders Jamie Harry, which extinguished all hopes of a comeback.

Serge Pilon contributed 68 yards on 9 carries while Maxime Trudeau's contribution were 60 yards on 4 catches. On defense, Dereck Zacard had an interception while Ryan White had a QB sack. Zacard, Alexis Roy, Kevin Robert and Jamal Ambris were the leading tacklers.

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Stallions kicked off to start the game and they surprised everyone by doing an on-side kick which was recovered by #6 at the Spartans 45-yd line. In three plays they got a first down at the St-Laurent 32-yd line but that was as good as it was going to get in this game. On the next play, Stallions starting QB got injured and two plays after that St-Laurent #2 intercepted a pass at his own 5-yd line and returned it 55 yards. The Spartans scored a touchdown two plays later to take a 6-0 lead and followed that up with two more on their next two drives for a 20-0 lead after only 11 minutes of play and the game was effectively over at that point.

The starting QB came back in the second half and Stallions did put together one 6-play, 33-yd offensive series but most of the other drives all ended in turnovers, most of them on downs. Yes it's true that they only had 24 players dressed for the game and their best receivers were out with injuries but it is still disappointing to watch them play their "crash-and-burn" style of football. Hopefully, they'll adjust for the game against St-Leonard and for the playoffs.

There were some bright spots on defense with #6 recovering two fumbles and #34 recovering one while #32 had a sack.

(16 h) Stallions Bantam 20 @ St-Bruno 42
(terrain/field: Parc Rabastalière)

Bantam team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Turnovers continue to plague the bantam team. However, unlike a week earlier in the game against the Bobcats where they managed to keep it close and still found a way to win, the Barons took advantage of the Stallions turnovers to build up a quick 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and they never looked back.

It was as if there were two different St-Lazare teams in the game. During most of the first half, the offense was on the field six times but only managed to gain 15 yards in total, scoring no points, punting the ball three times and turning it over on the other three series while Stallions defense caused two St-Bruno turnovers.
After that, things were much different. On the remaining seven offensive series in the game, Stallions scored three TDs, punted twice and had two turnovers while the defense caused three St-Bruno turnovers. If only they could play like that during the whole game the outcome would be different.

On offense the only standout was #11 who caught all five passes that were thrown to him for 63 yards. On defense, the players who stood out were #79 who had two interceptions and a fumble recovery while #1 and #94 had one fumble recovery each. #44, #10 and #99 were the leading tacklers.

Junior team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Heading into the game the Junior Stallions still had an outside chance of making it into the playoffs. If they could beat the Sabercats or if the Chateauguay Raiders would lose to the Cumberland Panthers then the final playoff spot would be decided in the head-to-head game between the Stallions and the Raiders on Oct. 21. As it turned out, the worst possible scenario played out - they lost to the Sabercats and the Raiders won their own game.

Things looked promising early on as the Junior Stallions went toe-to-toe with the Sabercats in the first quarter of the game, trading touchdowns and interceptions and they were only trailing by one point 20-21.
The visitors took advantage of an interception and a blocked punt to score two TDs for an early 14-0 lead but Stallions responded with a 69-yd catch-and-run TD by Alex Pilon and a 68-yd interception return TD by Seth Ataopoma to make the score 14-13. On the ensuing possession, the Sabercats replied with another TD but Stallions kept pace and scored one as well, this time on an 11-yd catch by Alex Pilon. However, this would be as close as the game would ever be because the Sabercats scored two more TDs before half time and three more in the second half while Stallions offense struggled to move the ball.

From the start of the 2nd quarter until the end of the game, on the 10 offensive drives that Stallions started, they accumulated a total of only 27 yards, punted four times and turned the ball over the other six times.

Alex Pilon stood out on offense with five catches for 111 yards. On defense, the three interception and one TD performance by
Seth Ataopoma should be enough to earn him the defensive player of the week honors. Others who stood out were Jamal Ambris for a QB sack and Jean-François Duperron, Robert Kevin and David Beltrani who each had a fumble recovery. Dereck Zacard and Matt Markell were the leading tacklers.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Les Pionniers set the tone for the game on their opening drive when they used seven consecutive running plays to move 53 yards and score a touchdown on a 1-yd run by #99 to take an early 6-0 lead which they would never relinquish.

While the offense moved the ball on the ground and controlled the clock, the defense kept L'Express off the scoreboard by taking the ball away from them - six of the 10 offensive drives that L'Express started finished with turnovers, five because of interceptions and one because of a fumble. The biggest offensive threat that the home team was able to put together was a 6-play, 38-yd drive near the end of the 1st half that didn't even get onto the Pionniers' side of the field.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Les Pionniers increased their lead to 18-0 midway through the 4th quarter when #99 scored his second TD of the game on a 3-yd run that capped off a 70-yd drive. #27 of the Pionniers team sealed the win when he intercepted a pass and ran it back 50 yards for a touchdown.

On offense, #99 made the biggest contribution with 28 carries for 234 yards. On defense, the players who stood out were #55, #40, #21, #22 and #27 who each made an interception.

Bantam team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. If the bantam Stallions make it to the President's Cup playoffs and especially if they end up having some success in the playoffs then it will be this game that could be the reason behind it. They played like a team that had a plan for winning the game and they were executing it. They still need to work on reducing the number of penalties - they had 11 called against them for 95 yards - but there is definite improvement compared to previous games.

Stallions started very strong and scored on their opening drive going 54 yards on 12 plays, consuming six minutes off the clock and finishing with #81 scoring a TD on a 12-yd catch (#5 kicked the convert). Their next two drives were also impressive with the first one going for 53 yards on 16 plays while the second one was for 50 yards on seven plays. Unfortunately, both were terminated by turnovers, one of them just a yard outside the end zone. The Bobcats, however, weren't able to mount much offense and the first half finished with the home team ahead 7-0.

When Stallions scored quickly at the start of the 2nd half to take a 14-0 lead it looked like they would earn an easy win but the Bobcats found some weaknesses in the Stallions defense, they started gaining a lot of yards on draw plays and screen passes and they scored on four consecutive drives to take a 20-14 lead with 2:31 left to play in the game.

With only 1:14 left on the clock, Stallions offense had a 3rd down and 10 yards to go at its own 45-yd line and chose to throw the ball but the pass was incomplete. Fortunately for them, the Bobcats, who until then had only two penalties called against them for a total of 10 yards, were assessed two major penalties on the play - one for roughing the passer and the other one for pass interference - and Stallions had a 1st down at the Bobcats 35-yd line. The next three plays were all incomplete passes but on the 4th down, with about 40 seconds left to play, #81 caught a 29-yd pass from #2 to give the home team a 1st down at the 6-yd line. Two plays later, #5 scored a TD on a 9-yd run and then kicked the convert for a 21-20 lead. Bobcats got the ball again with 20 seconds left but they could not get close enough to try a field goal.

On offense, #81 stood out with 168 yards on seven catches which is the 6th best receiving performance in a game in the bantam team's history. On defense, the players who stood out were #10 and #94 who each had a sack, #24 who had an interception and #90 who recovered a fumble. Leading tacklers were #79, #44 and #10.
