Coach Yves Cuillerier

Former midget Stallions head coach Yves Cuillerier (now the receivers coach with the Islanders)

Traduction est en cours. Désolé. With the head coach Patrick Gregory not able to be with the team for the first game of the season, the John Abbott College Islanders had one more challenge to overcome in addition to the home team Voltigeurs who finished the 2011 season in first place in division 3 and were promoted to division 2. However, the players and coaches rose up to the challenge, with a little help form a contingent of more than 100 supporters who battled heavy traffic to make it to Drummmmondville on time, and executed the right game plan that helped them win the game 19-6.

After giving up one point to the Voltigeurs near the end of the 1st quarter on a missed field goal, Islanders went in front 6-1 on the ensuing drive when Mathias Soler broke through the Drummondville d-line and ran 66 yards into the end zone. The 2nd quarter was marked by an exchange of punts by both teams and the 1st half ended with the Islanders maintaining the lead.

After turning the ball over on their first possession in the 2nd half, the Islanders then put together an 8-play, 68-yard scoring drive that finished with a 1-yd run into the end zone by QB Mario Porreca to increase their lead to 12-1. After the Voltigeurs made the score 12-6 thanks to a safety and a field goal with less than 5 minutes left to play, the Islanders sealed the win with another TD after the defense forced a turnover on downs at the home team's own 20-yd line with 1:26 left to play. Porreca scored again but this time on a 23-yd run that was part of a perfectly executed play action call that had the Voltigeurs defense completely fooled.

The team will now prepare for its first home game which will take place on Saturday, Sep. 8 at 7 pm against the Diablos from CEGEP Trois-Rivieres.

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Ball security and passing accuracy are two things that the midget Stallions will need to work on in order to have a better chance of winning games.

Lasalle quickly took control of the game when they grabbed a 7-0 lead after scoring a TD on their first possession on a 4-play, 76-yd drive. Stallions offense turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and the Warriors capitalized on the opportunity and needed just one play to score their second TD to take a 14-0 lead. The closest that the Stallions came to scoring some points came at the end of the 1s half when they got to the Warriors 9-yd line with about 10 seconds left and they were able to run two plays but they could not punch it in.

In the 2nd half, the offense got the ball five times but only one series took more than four plays and they were kept off the scoreboard. No player stood out on offense but #32 and #95 stood out on defense by combining on a QB sack.

(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

Junior team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The Ottawa Jr. Riders showed everyone that they meant business when they resorted to using the Ray Gaston theory of winning a football game and threw a deep pass on the first play from scrimmage that resulted in a 100-yd TD and a 7-0 lead after only 31 seconds of play.

Even though Stallions were able to tie the game midway through the 1st quarter when Alex Pilon scored on a 26-yd pass (Ashtton Ewers kicked the convert), the Jr. Riders scored touchdowns on seven of their next nine offensive drives to take a commanding 56-7 lead late in the 3rd quarter before Stallions were able to respond again.

Chase Vieira scored a TD with no time left on the clock in the 3rd quarter and Serge Pilon added a 1-yd rushing TD with less than five minutes left in the game to make it 56-21. Ottawa added a field goal to make it 59-21 before Vieira closed out the scoring with his second TD of the game on a 28-yd catch with less than two minutes left. Five turnovers and 15 penalties for 140 yards were the biggest contributors to the Stallions' loss.

On offense, in addition to Vieira's two TDs, Alex Pilon made the biggest contribution with 226 yards on six catches. On defense, Seth Ataopoma stood out with an interception that he almost returned for a TD and Raphael Giauris who had a sack. Maxime Trudeau and David Beltrani led with the most tackles.

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. With only 24 players ready for the game the Stallions midget team didn't look like it had much of a chance against a St-Leonard team that had close to 50 but they surprised a lot of people and made it a close game. In fact, with their speedy running backs and receivers who are difficult to tackle they may very well surprise a few other teams during the season, especially if their QB can learn to be more accurate with his passes.

The game started with St-Leonard scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions to take a quick 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Stallions narrowed the lead to 13-6 at the start of the 2nd quarter when #77 turned what looked like a sure interception by Cougars #7 into a touchdown on a 30-yd pass. However, the Cougars quickly re-established the 13 point lead when their #88 returned the ensuing kickoff 110 yards for a touchdown and then increased it to 26-6 on the next drive with a 45-yd TD catch. But, Stallions had the last word in the first half when #77 scored his second TD of the game with less than one second left to play on a 5-yd catch to make the score 26-12 at half time.

Stallions made the game even closer at the start of the 2nd half when #77 completed his scoring hat trick with 57-yd TD catch and #7 added a 31-yd field goal to make the score 26-21 for the visitors with four minutes left to play in the 3rd quarter. The Cougars then changed their offensive strategy and instead of just pounding the ball up the middle and moving the pile four or five yards at a time they sprinkled a few passes here and there which made a big difference. They scored two more touchdowns to make the score 40-21 before #33 for the Stallions closed out the scoring with a 20-yd TD catch with less than five minutes left to play in the game.

On offense, #77 stood out for the Stallions with six catches for 115 yards while #25 had 10 carries for 99 yards. On defense, #3 made the biggest contribution with eight solo tackles and two assists and recovering the ball on an on-side kick. #34 had an interception while #44, #62 and #95 combined for two sacks. The other leading tacklers were #5, #11 and #46.

Bantam team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. This was a game between two evenly matched teams that was marked by many turnovers (six for the Stallions and seven for the Aigles) and which was finally decided by converts with both teams resorting to the Sun Youth Hornets strategy of going for two points instead of kicking. In the end, the team that scored last won the game.

The game started well for the Stallions as they took a 6-0 lead on their first possession with #13 scoring a TD on a 5-yd run after a 12-play, 72-yd drive. Varennes tied the score 6-6 at the beginning of the 2nd quarter on a 85-yd punt return but Stallions replied immediately with another long scoring drive to retake the lead. This time it was a 9-play, 64-yd offensive series that finished with a 2-yd run by the QB #2.

Before the end of the first half, however, Varennes' #22 capped an 86-yd drive with a 10-yd run into the end zone which was followed by a successful 2-pt convert to give the local team a 14-12 lead at half time.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the seesaw battle continued when #5 scored a TD for the Stallions on a 1-yd run with less than seven minutes left to play but Varennes had the last word and scored the winning points on a 12-yd TD run by #22 which was part of an 11-play, 58-yd drive that included a 1st down conversion on a 4th down and five yards to go play. Stallions got the ball two more times before the clock ran out but each time turned it over.

On offense, #5 stood out with 96 yards on 16 carries while #13 gained 99 yards on 12 carries. On defense, #34, #50 and #92 each recovered a fumble. #79 had nine solo tackles and 7 assists while other standouts were #99, #50, #70, #1 and #56.

« Parties / Games ».
All the game schedules for the 2012 fall season have now been posted in the " Parties / Games " section. There are still a couple of games for which the exact times or dates have not been announced, such as the bantam Stallions' game vs St-Hubert on Sep. 8 or the midget Stallions' game vs Sun Youth on the weekend of Aug. 25-26 for example, but the majority of the schedule is already set.

For the youth football teams at the atom, mosquito and pee-wee levels, the season will start on the weekend of Aug. 11-12. That will also be the first weekend of competition for the bantam team. At the other elite levels, the midget team will start on Aug. 18 while the junior team will start on Aug. 25.

In high school football, the season will start at the end of August except for teams in the juvenile div. 3 which will start on Sep. 7. Division 1 CEGEP games start on Aug. 18 while div. 2 and 3 teams will start a week later.

Several important changes compared to the 2011 season need to be noted. They seem to be part of a trend in which the number of school teams is increasing while the number of civil teams is going down. The biggest difference is at the high school level where three new teams will be competing this year. They are from the Chêne-Bleu, Dorval-Jean-XXIII and Henri-Bourassa high schools. By contrast, the QBFL will have one less team this year because the Laprairie Diablos, who were the Earl de la Perralle division champions in 2011, were not able to field a bantam team this year.

There are also significant changes in the QJFL which has lost the South Shore Monarx team. However, in this case, the league will still have six teams because a new team has joined the league in place of the Monarx. It will be called the Junior Bruizers, it will be based on the South Shore of Montreal and it will play its games at the Rosanne-Laflamme field where the St-Hubert Rebelles play their home games.

In the next few days I will post the cumulative schedule of all the teams as I did in previous years. I will also be updating the field maps to reflect the new compositions of all the leagues.

2012-08-08 update: the cumulative game schedule shown in a graphical format has now been posted in the "Parties / Games " section.
