(9 h 30) Lakeshore Cougars 29 vs Stallions Pee-wee AAA 32
Séries éliminatoires / Playoffs
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)
La traduction est en cours.

What an exciting finish to this game.

Stallions were leading 32-14 at the start of the 4th quarter and appeared to be in control. However, the Cougars refused to throw in the towel and fought hard to the end. They took advantage of Stallions' turnovers and recovered an on-side kick to score two TDs and make it 32-29.

They got the ball again after a Stallions turnover on downs at their own 52-yd line with 55 seconds left to play. They got to the Stallions 45-yd line thanks to a roughing the passer penalty, but on the ensuing play Stallions intercepted a pass and were able to run out the clock and seal their win.

It wasn't pretty but the midget Stallions got the job done against the Richelieu Pirates and moved on to the second round of the Jack Simpson Cup playoffs.

Against a better team, their seven turnovers and 11 penalties could have been costly. Fortunately, Richelieu was not able to take advantage of Stallions' mistakes as they turned the ball over six times and had eight penalties called against them.

The decisive point in the game occurred at the end of the first half. As time was running out and trailing the Stallions 14-7, the Pirates attempted a 59-yd field goal. The kick was short and Alex Pilon fielded the ball at his own 2-yd line. With some good blocking he was able to streak down the right sideline all the way into the Pirates end zone. The touchdown seemed to take all the wind out of the sails for the visitors and Stallions were able to play the rest of the game just to protect their lead.

On offense, Serge Pilon gained 146 yards on 19 carries while Pier-Olivier Cherrier gained 98 yards on four catches.

On defense, Étienne Asselin stood out with an interception and a fumble recovery while Gerry-Dean Mavrokefalos had one interception. Dunovan Case and Xavier Gagnon-Tremblay each recovered a fumble and together with Justin Stratti combined to make three sacks. Asselin, Alexandre Normand and Turell Daye were the leading tacklers.

Lakeshore Cougars game stats

La traduction est en cours.

After turning the ball over on their first possession, the Lakeshore Cougars scored touchdowns on their next three consecutive offensive drives to build up a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter and they coasted after that to a comfortable 26-10 win.

The St-Hubert Rebelles mounted a bit of a comeback in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and trailed the Cougars by only 10 points but Lakeshore put the game out of reach with a touchdown in the 4th quarter after a 15-play, 83-yd scoring drive that took more than eight minutes off the clock.

They were poised to scored again thanks to a 1st down at the St-Hubert 1-yd line with 55 seconds left to play but the game was declared complete by the referees because of an injury to Rebelles player #21.

On offense, Peter Taddeo stood out with 209 yards on 19 carries while Luca Selim gained 105 yards on 17 carries.

On defense, the players who stood out were Lucky Daniels who recovered two fumbles and Mathew Da Silva who had an interception. The leading tackles were Daniels, Patrick Samuel, Jeremy Pizzi and Michael D'Andrea.

Bantam team game stats

La traduction est en cours.

Before the game, Stallions bantam team was in sixth place in the standings, two points ahead of the St-Bruno Barons. All they had to do was not to lose. A tie was as good as a win. They would have remained in sixth place and qualified for the President's Cup playoffs but instead they found a way to give the win away and will now only play in the consolation playoffs for the QBFL Cup.

With 1:36 left to play and the score tied 30-30, St-Bruno got the ball at their own 53 yard line after a Stallions turnover on downs. In five plays, they got to the 39-yd line and it looked like they still had a chance to score the winning points until Max Emond intercepted a St-Bruno pass at his own 19-yd line with only 19 seconds left on the clock. It was euphoria amongst the home team fans but it only lasted for a few seconds. While everyone thought that the Stallions would simply take the knee, run out the clock and be happy with a berth in the President's Cup playoffs, instead they threw a pass down the middle of the field that was intercepted by Barons' #60 and returned to the 13-yd line. Now, it's possible that the coaches called for a different play to be run but in the eight years that I have been following the bantam team I know of only one instance when the players deliberately ran a different play than the one that was called by the coaches (Oct. 5, 2008 against the St-Leonard Cougars and it was on a convert and not a play from scrimmage). I strongly suspect that the passing play was called from the sidelines because when I talked to some parents after the game they indicated that the coaches were convinced that they had to win the game.
St-Bruno took a timeout to plan their strategy and then kicked a 20-yd field goal for the win and took over the coveted sixth place in the standings. Instead of playing the Boucherville Grizzlis in the first round of the playoffs, they now have a week off and will most likely face the Varennes Aigles at home on Nov. 5 or 6.

On offense, #26 stood out with 156 yards on 27 carries while QB Troy Rothdram completed 10 passes out of 24 for 173 yards and had two interceptions.
On defense, Max Emond stood out with an interception and a fumble recovery (he actually stripped the ball away from the Barons running back after he gained a 1st down on a 4th down play) while #77 had one interception. Players #26, #58 and #59 had one sack each. #11, #58, #29 and #77 were the leading tacklers.

La traduction est en cours.

Stallions midget team did what it had to do to finish the regular season in 2nd place in the standings and by doing so they accomplished what no other St-Lazare midget team was able to do during the previous six seasons - they gained a promotion to the Bruno Heppell division for the 2012 season.
Their 8-2 record equalled the mark set by the 2006 midget team which finished in 3rd place and won the Jack Simpson Cup in the playoffs. The three shutouts that they posted so far is also equal to the number of shutouts that the 2006 team had.

Serge, Alex and Nicolas Pilon had another very productive game on offense, scoring 45 of the 47 points, but the story of the game was the defense. They limited the Scorpions to just 85 yards of offense and three first downs. Thanks to the three interceptions in this game, which brought his total to seven for the season, Gerry-Dean Mavrokefalos surpassed the previous team record of six set in 2005, 2006 and 2009. Depending on how far they go in the playoffs, several other players still have an opportunity to set new offensive and defensive team records.

Even though the Stallions were already eliminated from the playoffs, the last game of the regular season was important for two reasons:
  1. Stallions had never beaten the Raiders since joining the QJFL, and
  2. with a win they could have moved out of the last place in the standings ahead of the Cumberland Panthers
For the first three quarters it looked like they might win the game and they held a 23-20 lead with about 11 minutes left to play but a rash of penalties late in the game and their inability to stop the Raiders running game allowed Chateauguay to score 21 unanswered points and get the win.

Stallions had several good scoring chances in the first and second quarter, including a 1st down at the 1-yd line, but they could not capitalize on them.

On offense, Maxime Trudeau completed 13 passes on 31 attempts for 253 yards but he also threw five interceptions. Justing McLean was the leading receiver with 9 catches for 162 yards. This kind of performance allowed him to be the most productive receiver in the QJFL this year despite having played in only three games.

On defense, Cory Sim-Robertson stood out with a fumble recovery while Charles-Olivier Conway and Matt Markell combined on a sack. Markell, Jamal Ambris, Maxime Laflamme and Maxime Latour were the leading tacklers.

Junior team game stats

The junior Stallions picked up their first win of the season as history repeated itself almost exactly one year after they defeated the Cumberland Panthers by exactly the same 22-21 score during the 2010 season (Oct. 9, 2010).
Last season, the difference was a missed field goal that resulted in a rouge while this year it was a safety that Cumberland conceded after the ball sailed over the kicker's head on a punt attempt. The other element of this win that was different was that last year Stallions were behind 21-14 at the start of the 4th quarter and won it with a TD with only 1:24 left in the game while this time they were in front 22-13 and had to fight hard to prevent a Panthers comeback.

Despite the gusting winds and constant rain, Stallions stuck to their passing game and it paid off for them. The Panthers offense was more balanced between running and passing but they committed 10 turnovers in the game, three of which occurred in the red zone and cost them what looked like sure scoring chances.

Maxime Trudeau played at the quarterback position during the entire game and he completed 17 passes on 40 attempts for 301 yards and had four passes intercepted. Justin Maclean caught six passes for 210 yards.

On defense, Jamal Ambris stood out with two fumble recoveries and one interception while Nick Robidoux and Guy Beluse-Lavoie each recovered one fumble. Cory Pascal contributed with one interception while Charles-Olivier Conway had a sack. The leading tacklers were Maxime Latour and Matt Markell.

A heart-breaking loss for les Citadins. They could have and should have won the game, or at least salvaged a tie, but they ended up losing because of a missed convert kick.
The defense captured the momentum for the Citadins at the end of the 3rd quarter when they stopped the Panthers' offense on seven consecutive plays from 12 yards out or less. When the opposing kicker's field goal attempt from 18 yards missed the target it was the Citadins offense which then put together a 96-yd drive with 15 rushing and one passing play that finished with Mathieu Lefebvre scoring a touchdown on a five yard run.
Unfortunately, on the convert attempt, the ball was not well snapped and the kick was partially blocked.
The Panthers then responded with a touchdown with only 1:27 left on the clock and the Citadins could not score any more points.

(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

Bantam team game stats

Several factors contributed to the reasons why Stallions lost this game. Turnovers and questionable play calling were certainly prominent among them but the one that was most evident, however, was the team's lack of discipline and composure. There were 14 penalties that were called against the Stallions that cost them 125 yards and, more importantly, nullified some big gains. Two players were even sent off the field by the officials to cool off. This is something that the coaches will have to address because it could prove costly in future games.

The game started with St-Hubert taking a 7-0 lead after barely two minutes of play. The two teams then traded the lead back and forth an it was 21-14 for the Rebelles at half time. Stallions tied it up at the start of the 3rd quarter but St-Hubert regained the lead just seven minutes later. In the 4th quarter, St-Lazare appeared poised to tie the game up again when #81 scored a TD on a 34-yd catch but instead of kicking a 1-pt convert to make the score 28-28, for some unexplainable reason, they decided to go for a 2-pt convert which didn't work and left them trailing the visitors 28-27. That's when the players' frustrations really became evident as they started to take penalties and St-Hubert capitalized to increase their lead to 34-27.

Stallions made one last valiant effort when they tried the hook-and-ladder play with time running out on the clock but Jeremy Comeau was tackled by St-Hubert defense just two yards from the end zone.

Troy Rothdram finished the game with 265 passing yards on 32 passes with 15 completions and four interceptions. Max Emond caught six passes for 125 yards and three TDs.
On defense, the players who stood out were #72 and #77 with one interception each while #58 and #59 had one sack each. #11 and #29 made the most tackles.

(19 h) Boucherville Grizzlis 38 vs Stallions Midget 21
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

Midget team game stats

Stallions midget team dug itself into a deep hole right at the start by allowing the Grizzlis to take a quick 14-0 lead and then had to fight hard the rest of the game but penalties and turnovers ultimately cost them a chance to win it.
It was clear that Boucherville's defensive strategy was to disrupt the Stallions' passing attack and they did it effectively. They forced the QB to rush his throws and they even managed to draw a couple of intentional grounding penalties. This forced the Stallions to rely more heavily on their running game but the Grizzlis were prepared for that. Other than Serge Pilon's 81-yd TD run, they limited Stallions' ball carriers to small gains.

Even under these tough conditions Stallions still would have had a good chance to win the game if it wasn't for the large number of turnovers and penalties. On two separate occasions Stallions fumbled the ball less than five yards from the end zone while the 15 penalties they were called for cost them 165 yards. Hopefully, they will not let this happen again when they play against the Greenfield Park Packers.

On offense, Serge Pilon was outstanding again with over 200 yards gained.
On defense, Kevin Cronn and Jean-Danny Chouinard each recovered a fumble while Gerry-Dean Mavrokefalos had an interception and made the most tackles. Turell Daye, Antonin Cusson-Delisle and Xavier Gagnon-Tremblay combined on three sacks.
