September 2011 Archives

Since the start of the season, in fact since June, I have been taking a lot of pictures but until now I have not found a convenient way to manage them.

I finally convinced myself to use the Picasa service from Google. Using their Picasa 3 application and their image hosting service I have prepared fifteen photo albums from some of the games that I attended. The links to these albums are available below.

2011-10-05 update: links to three new collections of photos from the bantam and midget teams' games in Sherbrooke as well as photos from the Concordia vs St-Francis Xavier game have been added.

2011-10-06 update: links to pictures from a pee-wee AAA and OVFL Varsity games have been added.
À vous de vous amuser ! Enjoy!

First victory that the new Soulanges High School Pionniers football team won on the field.

The Pionniers started the game strong, putting together a 10-play, 80-yd scoring drive on their first possession to take a 8-0 lead which would prove to be enough to win their first game on the field instead of by default. Gabriel Seguin scored the first touchdown in the Pionniers' brief history on a 24-yd run and then added a 2-pt convert.

They were poised to increase their lead on their next possession with a first down at the Mgr. Richard 17-yd line but they turned the ball over on an interception. However, they returned the favor early in the second quarter when Laurent Barsalou intercepted a pass by the Buck quarterback and ran 40 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. Gabriel Brisson then added another 2-pt convert to give the Soulanges team a 16-0 lead.

After that, the game became a battle of turnovers and neither team could put together a scoring threat. Mgr. Richard finally scored a TD in the 4-th quarter to narrow the gap to 16-6 but it was too little, too late.

For a brand new team, the Pionniers showed a lot of talent, both on offense as well as defense. The only area in which they need to improve is their pass defense because there were many plays during the game when the Buck receivers were wide open and the ball was delivered right into their hands but they could not hold on to it.

Gabriel Seguin finished the game with 14 carries for 128 yards while Gabriel Brisson gained 85 yards on 11 carries.

Junior team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Without any credible running threat and with their passing game badly afected by the constant rain, the junior team was no match for the visiting Monarx.

The South Shore team scored on a five play, 60-yd drive barely two minutes after the start of the game to take a 7-0 lead and they never looked back. Justin MacLean scored all of the points for the Stallions with two receiving touchdowns, one of which was a 90-yd catch-and-run play, and a 2-pt convert. He finished the game with 125 yards on three catches. He also gained 86 yards on three kickoff returns while Chase Vieira had 101 also on three attempts.

On defense, the players who stood out were Matt Markell who had a sack while Maxime Latour had two. Sam Hansen had an interception and made the most tackles. Others who made the most tackles included Jamal Ambris, Michael Dimitriadis, Maxime Trudeau and David Delorme.
The loss erased any remaining chance that the junior Stallions had of making the playoffs.

With free wi-fi internet access that's available at the field it was possible to post this update right on the spot after the game. Wow, that's fun!

I would also like to express my gratitude to the Sherbrooke Bulldogs Football Association which allowed me to stay in the timer's booth during the two games. This allowed me to have access to an electrical outlet and protected my PC from the rain. I really appreciate it.

Game report

The bantam team started the game with three turnovers on their first four possessions and allowed the Bulldogs to take a 3-0 lead. After that they took advantage of nine Bulldogs tuurnovers to score five touchdowns for a convincing 41-10 win.

The game had the same characteristics as the Hurricane Irene game between the Junior Stallions and the South Shore Monarx in the sense that the only time that any team was able to score points was when it had the strong wind in the back. Danny-Ray Wilson-Derouin played QB during the entire game and he completed four passes on 16 attempts for 143 yards and had one interception. Recent addition to the team Maxime Emond caught two passes for 112 yards and both of them resulted in a touchdown. Wilson-Derouin also made a contribution on defense by recovering a fumble while #35 made an interception. #29, #56 and #58 combined on two sacks. #11, #24 and #82 made the most tackles.

Something also has to be said about the Sherbrooke team. Even though they only have one win this season, they have a lot of talent on their team. Their o-line and d-line are good. Their receivers also made some impressive catches. If they only could find a player who could throw the ball well they would be a very competitive team.

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The midget team didn't need much offensive production to beat the Sherbrooke Bulldogs, which had only 24 players dressed for the game.
They took advantage of 11 Bulldogs turnovers and an average starting position at the Sherbrooke 35-yd line to score points seven times in addition to the points scored by special teams or the defense.

Even though Serge and Alex Pilon each scored three touchdowns, neither one of them took advantage of the situation to gain easy yards. Serge Pilon picked up 93 yards on three carries while his brother Alex had 35 yards on three catches.

Serge Pilon also helped out on defensive by recovering an on-side kick while Turell Daye and Dunovan Case each recovered a fumble. Jason Carrier made two interceptions while Gerry-Dean Mavrokefalos had one. Étienne Asselin made the most tackles.

To finish the report a comment must be made about the Sherbrooke team who, unlike their fellow bantam team, still have not earned even one win this year but they do share one important similarity which is that they also have some good talent on the team. Their o-line and d-line did well against the Stallions. Their weakness, however, is the same as the bantam team's which is that they do not have a quarterback who can throw the ball well. Being able to make a pass for 10-15 yards would give their offense more balance and would allow them to gain more yards on running plays.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé.

The midget team's game against the Lakeshore Cougars turned out to be a speed contest - Stallions' speed on offense versus the Cougars' speed on defense. That and turnovers. Whereas the Cougars committed two of them, Stallions turned the ball over six times.

At the start of the game, it looked like it was going to be another easy win for the Stallions. They scored on their first two possessions after barely seven minutes of play to take a 14-0 lead. With less than three minutes left to play in the first half and leading 14-7, they had a chance to increase their lead with a first down at the Cougars 25-yd line. On the ensuing play they handed the ball off to Kevin Cronn who went right through the Cougars d-line and headed for the corner of the end zone. It looked like a sure touchdown. However, Lakeshore's Shanton Smith managed to chase him down and made a tackle at the 1-yd line. Stallions fans thought that he simply delayed the inevitable but it turned out to be the turning point of the game because on the next play, Stallions fumbled the ball and Lakeshore's Lucky Daniels recovered it, just like he did in exactly the same situation at the start of the season against the Victoriaville Vicas. The Cougars then put together a 108-yd, six play scoring drive to tie the game at 14-14 which gave them the momentum from then on. The key play on that drive was a 55-yd run by Cougars' QB William Lemire on a third down play from his own team's 5-yd line.

Stallions got back in front 21-14 near the end of the 3-rd quarter but Cougars took advantage of an interception by Greg Hansen (almost exactly like he did against the Vicas) that gave them the ball at the Stallions 7-yd line to tie the game at 21-21 at the start of the 4-th quarter. Lakeshore took the lead right after thanks to a touchdown on a 70-yd punt return and sealed the win with another TD on their next possession.

On offense, Serge Pilon was again outstanding for the Stallions gaining 155 yards on 21 carries and 68 yards on two catches. Lakeshore's Peter Taddeo, however, matched him almost step-for-step with 144 yards on 17 carries.

On defense, the players who stood our for Stallions were Etienne Asselin and Xavier Gagnon-Tremblay who each had a sack and Antonin Cusson-Delisle who recovered a fumble. Asselin, Gagnon-Tremblay, Gerry -Dean Mavrokefalos, Alexandre Normand and Jean-Danny Chouinard were the leading tacklers.

Bantam team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé.

After turning the ball over on their first possession and seeing the Varennes Aigles take a 7-0 lead at the start of the game, the bantam team scored touchdowns on five consecutive drives after that for a 33-13 half-time lead and an easy 54-19 win.

Turnovers, again, were the biggest factor in the outcome of the game, but this time Stallions were on the positive side of the ledger, as they turned the ball over only four times during the entire game, while the Varennes team committed eight turnovers, five of which led to Stallions touchdowns.

On offense, Troy Rothdram and Jeremy Comeau each had a good game. Rothdram completed 18 out of 27 passes for 220 yards, five TDs and two interceptions. Comeau gained 144 yards (101 yards on 17 carries and 43 yards on five catches).

On defense, the standouts were #5, #20, #33 and #35 who each had an interception and #82 who had a sack and a fumble recovery. #7 and #11 were the leading tacklers.

As side note, it was a good thing that the weather was warm and dry on the day of the game because the players had to change from their civilian clothes into game gear on the playground next to the Carrousel Elementary School building. I will try to find out if this was just an exceptional case or if this is the norm when other teams play against the Varennes Aigles.

(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

With only eight minutes left to play and the score tied at 12-12, Stallions Pee-Wee AA team appeared to be in a good position to win the game. At that time, the Warriors were at their own 40-yd line in a 4-th down and nine yards to go situation. On the 4-th down play, with the QB lined up in a shotgun formation, the ball was snapped but landed at his feet. He tried to pick it up but instead Lasalle #45 scooped it up off the ground and ran down the right side of the field 70 yards into the Stallions end zone. The 2-pt kick convert was good and the Warriors hung on to win the game.

Bantam team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The bantam team is proving to be a real enigma. There are times when they play energetic, inspired football and then there are other times when they seem to play without any purpose or direction.

A lot was expected from the bantam team going into the game because they had the same 3-2 win-loss record as the Cougars but that was quite deceptive. The three teams that the Cougars defeated had a combined record of 6-9 while the three victories that the Stallions registered came against teams with a combined record of 1-14. In the end, the deciding factor in winning the game was the number of turnovers - Stallions committed nine of them while the Cougars only turned the ball over three times.

The bright spots for the Stallions were some of the individual efforts. #7 stood out not only for scoring a touchdown on an interception return while playing on defense but also for making four catches for 79 yards while playing on offense. Other players who stood out on defense were #82 and #96 who each recovered a fumble while #71 had a sack. #29, #11, #56 and #65 were the leading tacklers.

(19 h) Chateauguay Raiders 0 vs Stallions Midget 37
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Even though they have 32 players on the roster, only 25 Chateauguay Raiders were on the field to face the Stallions midget team. Thanks to their fast defense, they were able to keep the game close for the first 29 minutes but turnovers and fatigue finally took their toll.

The turning point of the game happened with only 1:02 left to play in the first half. After Lukas Redguard tackled Serge Pilon three yards behind the line of scrimmage, Stallions were facing a 2-nd down and 13 yards to go at their own 4-yd line. On the next play, Nicolas Pilon threw a short pass to his brother Alex, who got great blocking help down field from the third member of the brother trio Serge, and ran into the end zone for a touchdown. The 106-yd play set a new midget team record for the longest passing play, beating the previous mark of 102 yards set in 2008 by Marc-Étienne Sarazin-Côté.

Stallions got the ball back again with 0:43 left on the clock thanks to an interception by Gerry-Dean Mavrokefalos and scored another TD two plays later on a 58-yd run by Ashton Ewers.

Three offensive players gained more than 100 yards during the game. Ashton Ewers had 116 yards on 13 carries, Serge Pilon gained 131 yards (10 carries for 101 yards and one catch for 30 yards) while Alex Pilon gained 132 yards (two carries for 26 yards and three catches for 116 yards).
On defense, in addition to Mavrokefalos who had an interception, the players who stood out were Olivier Cabanie who recovered a fumble and Dunovan Case who made the most tackles.
In order to be well-prepared to play against Lakeshore and Boucherville, however, the team still needs to work on ball security and on reducing the number of penalties.

Junior team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The junior team's offense finally found a way to get into the end zone and scored five touchdowns. Unfortunately, the defense could not keep the Raiders running game in check and gave up 432 yards, which is the most rushing yards that any junior team has allowed since the third game of the 2008 season when the Monarx gained 375 yards on the ground.

It was an uphill struggle from the first play of the game when Isiah Taylor intercepted a pass and ran 40 yards for a touchdown to give the Raiders a quick 6-0 lead. Stallions got the lead back at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 4-yd TD catch by Chase Vieira.

The two teams then traded touchdowns back and forth and the score at the end of the third quarter was 33-28 for the Raiders. However, in the fourth quarter the Raiders took advantage of three Stallions turnovers to score two more touchdowns and put the game out of reach.

On offense, the players who stood out were Maxim Bourgon who completed 13 passes out of 29 attempts for 191 yards with two interceptions, and Chase Vieira who gained 79 yards on four catches, two of which were spectacular. On defense, Maxime Trudeau made the biggest impact with six solo and four assisted tackles in addition to recovering a fumble and making an interception. Trudeau also played at the QB position on three series in the third and fourth quarters where he completed four passes on seven attempts for 85 yards and one touchdown.
Sam Hansen also had an interception while Philippe Legault-Barbe, Cory Sim-Robertson and Matt Markell combined on three sacks.

At least three exceptional things happened this weekend:
  1. the bantam team scored 76 points against the Île-Perrot Western Patriotes. This is the most points that a Stallions bantam team has ever scored. Until now, the most points scored was 62, once against Lasalle in 2009 and once against Greenfield Park in 2004
  2. the midget team won its 4th game in a row,  which gives them a record of 4-0. Other midget teams in the past started with a 3-0 record but never 4-0.
  3. the junior team's record fell to 0-3 which is the first time that this has happened at the start of the season since the team began playing in 2008.

I will post some brief reports about some of the games from the past weekend very soon.

Midget team game stats

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The midget Stallions finally played a team that really tested their offense and defense and prepared them well for three tough opponents that they will face in the next four weeks - Chateauguay, Lakeshore and Boucherville.

In fact, the Richelieu Pirates were in the position to win the game late in the 4-th quarter but a costly turnover cost them the potential victory. With only about two minutes left to play in the game and the score tied 21-21, the Pirates were at their own 43-yd line and punting the ball on a 4-th down and 15 yards to go situation. However, Stallions were penalized 10 yards for too many players on the field and Richelieu decided to go for it on 4-th and 5 yards to go. They handed the ball off to their fast receiver/running back/linebacker #5 on a sweep play but Gerry-Dean Mavrokefalos saw the play coming and tackled the ball carrier two yards short of the first down marker to force a turnover on downs.

Stallions' offense then put together a six play, 56-yd drive that finished with the game winning TD scored on a play that started with Serge Pilon carrying the ball to the 2-yd line, being tackled by Richelieu defenders but still being able to make a lateral pass to his brother Alex who then walked into the end zone untouched.

Right after that, it looked like the Stallions had sealed their 4-th straight victory when Alexandre Normand recovered the ball on the ensuing short kickoff with less than a minute to play, but St-Lazare gave the ball away two plays later when it was fumbled on a snap. On the next play by the Pirates, they threw a deep pass to their receiver #10 who was behind the defense and just 20 yards from the end zone, but the ball went straight through his hands and hit the ground. They tried a similar play three more times but each time Stallions defense was ready and the passes were incomplete.

Serge Pilon was the most productive rusher with 163 yards on 12 carries while Pier-Olivier Cherrier was the leading receiver with six catches for 93 yards.

On defense, Jason Carrier made an interception while Alexandre Normand recovered a fumble. #35, Turrell Daye, Jeffrey Montreuil, Dario Giansante and Xavier Gagnon-Tremblay combined on three sacks. Mavrokefalos, Daye and Etienne Asselin were the leading tacklers.

(terrain/field: CEGEP Valleyfield)

Two former St-Lazare players contributed some big plays for the Noir et Or but it was not enough to help them win the game.
Alexandre Chevrier played on defense and made several big tackles as well as an interception that led to a field goal, while Alexandre Aristyl played on offense and scored one of the Valleyfield touchdowns.

However, the inability of the Valleyfield offense to sustain their attack for more than two or three plays meant that the defense was on the field a lot and it was evident by the end of the third quarter that they did not play with the same energy that they had in the first half. That allowed Outaouais to score 27 points to take a 27-10 lead with only 1:50 left to play in the game.

The Noir et Or made it close with a quick touchdown, then recovering an on-side kick and scoring another TD. They got the ball one last time at center field with just nine seconds left in the game and they managed to execute two passing plays but both ended up as incomplete passes.

Valleyfield offense has some work to do, especially on their run plays, to be more competitive against the top teams in the division.

(14 h)  Selwyn House 32 vs Cité-des-Jeunes Juvenile 40
(terrain/field: É.S. Cité-des-Jeunes)

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Two teams with completely different offensive strategies - Selwyn House which relies heavily on passing (38 pass attempts and 15 runs) while Cite-des-Jeunes sticks to the ground attack (6 pass attempts and 51 carries). Taking into consideration the hot and humid playing conditions, the Citadins' strategy proved to be the right one because by the time the fourth quarter came around, Selwyn House defense looked tired and ineffective against their running game.

Things started off badly for the Griffons who turned the ball over to the Citadins on only the second play of game at their own 27-yd line when the ball was fumbled on the snap and Wilfredo Munoz-Mercier recovered it. Two plays later, Matthieu Lefebvre scored the first TD of the season on a 7-yd run to put his team ahead 7-0 after a convert kick by Alexandre Gravel-Vermet. However, Selwyn House responded immediately with a TD on a 41-yd run by #34 to make it 7-6.

The two teams then got into a shootout, trading touchdowns and the lead back and forth until the 4-th quarter when the Citadins took advantage of the tired Griffons defense to go ahead 39-25 with less than seven minutes left to play. The Griffons made the score 39-32 with a TD by #12 with 4:11 left to play but the home team was then able to almost run out the clock. The visitors got the ball with 0:50 left to play and they got to the Citadins 34-yd line but a pass into the end zone on the last play of the game was broken up by the Citadins defense.

Both teams showed a lot of talent and looked like they will make formidable opponents for the other teams in their group.

(9 h 30) Île-Perrot Western Patriotes 8 vs Stallions Pee-wee AAA 22
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

The game became a battle of turnovers and the team that made fewer mistakes ended up winning it, which is usually the case in football.

The Western Patriotes, in fact, turned the ball over on their first possession but it did not cost them any points. On the contrary, on their next offensive drive they scored a TD to take an 8-0 lead. Stallions, however, answered right back with a TD of their own to narrow the gap to 8-6. They then took advantage of another Île-Perrot turnover late in the 2nd quarter to take a 14-8 lead.

With less than four minutes left to play in the game, the Western Patriotes appeared poised to retake the lead after putting together a 15-play, 97-yd drive that took more than 10 minutes off the clock but they turned the ball over again, this time on a failed 4th down and goal at the Stallions 3-yd line. Stallions offense then marched 108 yards the other way to score a TD that sealed their victory.

Bantam team game stats

The bantam Stallions had 30 players on the roster for this game, which helped them keep pace with the Laprairie Diablos for the first half, but with several key players playing on both sides of the ball it wasn't enough.

This was especially evident in the second half when the offense was able to generate less than 80 yards compared to the first half when it gained almost 200. Five turnovers and 12 penalties that the Stallions committed also had a big impact on the final score.

Jeremy Comeau made the biggest contribution for his team by gaining 106 yards (1 TD, 19 carries for 68 yards and 6 catches for 38 yards) and making an interception at his own 10-yd line while playing on defense to prevent the Diablos from scoring another TD in the 2nd quarter.

(19 h) Victoriaville Vicas 14 vs Stallions Midget 46
(terrain/field: Westwood Jr. H.S.)

Midget team game stats

Stallions' special teams and the defense were the difference that helped them win the game. In fact, looking only at the offensive output generated on plays from scrimmage, Victoriaville had a slight advantage.

Stallions took the lead right from the opening whistle when Alex Pilon returned the kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. Victoriaville responded with a TD when they got the ball but the home team scored three more times before the 1st quarter was over to go in front 27-6 and they never looked back.

Even though they turned the ball over five times in the last three quarters the outcome of the game was never in doubt, partly because Victoriaville turned the ball over seven times during the same time period. The midget team also needs to work on reducing the number of penalties. During this game they were flagged 11 times for 109 yards and, more importantly, had some big plays called back.

On defense, the players who stood out were Steff Monahan, Codey Daly and Xavier Gagnon-Tremblay who had one interception each as well as Blaise Pascal-Youan who recovered a fumble. Turell Daye, Etienne Asselin and Gagnon-Tremblay combined on two sacks.

The game was a scoreless, defensive battle until there was only 1:11 left to play. That's when the burgundy team's #2 scored the winning TD on a 2-yd run. The silver team then got the ball back in the burgundy atom territory but they turned the ball over on a fumble on the first play and the game was over.
