OVFL Varsity
Markham Raiders 14 vs Cornwall Wildcats 35

La traduction est en cours. Désolé.
It was a classic David vs Goliath match-up with the Markham team being the David with only 17 players dressed for the game. However, what they lacked in numbers they made up for it with shear spunk and determination. They clearly dominated the play in the first half but only got a 14-14 tie to show for it.
In the second half, Cornwall used a lot of "no huddle" offense and the fast tempo was too much for the tired Raiders players.

Mathew Mondoux was outstanding for Cornwall, scoring four touchdowns and running for over 200 yards.

At the end of the first quarter and the Rive-Sud du Quebec team leading 21-0 it looked like the game was going to be a blowout but the QBFL team fought back to tie it up after three quarters of play.
The QBFL team had the ball first but they got in trouble quickly. On the fourth play of the game they turned the ball over on a fumble and RSQ quickly capitalized with a TD on a 33-yd passing play. Things only got worse for QBFL as they went three-and-out on their next possession while RSQ increased their lead to 14-0 on their second drive. Next time the QBFL offense went on the field they turned the ball over again and once again RSQ took advantage to increase its lead to 21-0.

In the second quarter, however, the QBFL team's fortunes turned completely around. The defense caused two turnovers, a fumble recovery by Etienne Asselin and an interception by Chaz Miller-McIntyre, which the offense was able to convert into 10 points thanks to a TD by Jaylan Grandison on a 5-yd catch and a 15-yd field goal by Adam Sinagra to make the score 21-10 at the half.

In the third quarter, QBFL defense continued to dominate the RSQ offense and they were able to score four points after twice forcing their opponents to concede a safety. They finally tied the game at 21-21 near the end of the third quarter when Justin Julien scored a TD on a 85-yd kickoff return.

In the fourth quarter the momentum had shifted to the QBFL Elites team and they appeared poised to score the winning TD. However, penalties and turnovers proved costly and allowed the RSQ team to kick the winning field goal with only 1:36 left to play.

Thanks to a major RSQ penalty that nullified an interception, QBFL had a chance to tie the game with a 37-yd field goal with only three seconds left in the game. Adam Sinagra's kick had the height and the distance but it sailed just on the outside of the goal post.

Justin Julien was selected as the MVP for the QBFL Elites team while Philippe Martin was the MVP for the RSQ team.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé.
After winning three games in a row, the high-flying Cornwall Wildcats came back down to earth after a 38-7 loss to the visiting Toronto Thunder team.

Even though Toronto had fewer players on the team than the Wildcats, they had more depth and they used it effectively. This was particularly evident in the running game where all four of their running backs (#4, #19, #23 and #55) were able to get significant yardage.

The Wildcats still have a mathematical chance of making the playoffs but they will need help from other teams.
First, they will need to beat the visiting Markham Raiders and then they will have to hope that the Newmarket Bucs defeat the Etobicoke Eagles and that the Myers Riders beat the Pickering Dolphins.

Here is a link to the article published in the Standard-Freeholder newspaper about this game.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The Outaouais MU17 team came very close to scoring their first victory at the Wilson Challenge tournament but a couple of late game turnovers cost them the win.

After Montreal-Metro jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the start of the game both teams traded punts and turnovers until Outaouais finally got on the scoreboard with a 17-yd field goal by Frednick Evaillard half way through the second quarter. Montreal-Metro then increased its lead to 16-3 but in the last two minutes of the first half Outaouais was able to put together an 89-yd, 10-play drive that finished with an eight yard TD pass to Mathieu Bradley to make the score 16-10 at the break.

Outaouais defense started the second half with an interception by Thomas Carrier but their offense could not capitalize on the opportunity. Instead, Montreal-Metro scored a TD to increase its lead to 22-10.

In the fourth quarter, Outaouais dominated the game and it appeared imminent that they would take the lead, especially after getting a 1st down at the Montreal-Metro 10-yd line but they came away empty handed because of a fumble. On their next possession they did score a TD on a four yard reception by Maxime Chainey to make the score 22-17 and they had the ball again with 1:43 left to play. They got to the Montreal-Metro 44-yd line with 0:43 left on the clock but they could not convert on a 4th down and two yards to go and they turned the ball over.

Outaouais' QB-WR duo of Michael Arruda and Mathieu Bradley worked really well on offense. Bradley caught almost everything that was thrown his way, making 9 receptions for 169 yards and 1 TD.

The performance earned him the distinction of being selected the game MVP for the Outaouais team while Kevin Rodolphe took the honors for the Montreal Metro team.

More details will be provided shortly.

Outaouais 6 QBFL Elites 48

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. Five local players were part of the 50-player QBFL Elites team that convincingly defeated the team from Outaouais 48-6 in its first game at the 2011 Wilson Challenge MU17 tournament.

Running backs Ryan Dickson and Kevin Cronn represented the St-Lazare Stallions while DB Gerry Mavrokefalos, LB Etienne Asselin and DL Xavier Gagnon-Tremblay represented the Île-Perrot Patriotes.

The QBFL team scored on three of its first five possessions and for a 21-0 lead with only 1:28 left to play in the opening half. But, Outaouais took advantage of three major penalties by the QBFL defense to move the ball 77 yards for a touchdown on a 4-yd pass to Mathieu Bradley with only three seconds left on the clock to reduce the gap to 21-6 and get some momentum.

However, three turnovers in the second half proved costly for the Outaouais as the QBFL team was able to capitalize to put up 27 more points.

Thomas Carrier was named the game MVP for the Outaouais team while Skylar Bayliff took the honors for the QBFLers.

La traduction est en cours. Désolé. The North Shore Elites team kicked off the 2011 Wilson Challenge MU15 competition with a convincing 49-12 win over the team representing the Mauricie region.

Out of the 40 players that are on the North Shore Elites team, eight are from the St-Lazare Football News coverage area - five are from the St-Lazare Stallions and three are from the Île-Perrot Western Patriotes:

Representing the Stallions are:
  • Marc-André Charbonneau, OL
  • Henry Skerrett, LB
  • Julio Assunçao, OL
  • Darcy Thibodeau, DL
  • Braxton Brown, DL
The players representing the Western Patriotes are:
  • Tanner Eaves, DB
  • Conrad Luthe, RB
  • Dawson Spooner, OL
The game started out as a shoot-out, with touchdowns being scored on the first three offensive drives, and North Shore going in front 13-6. With 30 seconds left in the 1st quarter North Shore increased its lead to 20-6 thanks to a Philippe Dion TD on a 52-yd punt return.

Things then settled down until there were barely more than two minutes left in the first half when Mauricie reduced the deficit to 20-12 thanks to a touchdown by Samuel Bellemare who recovered the ball in the North Shore end zone after Philippe Dion fumbled it on a punt return. The joy amongst the Mauricie supporters was short lived, however, because on the ensuing kickoff, Michael Sananes fielded the ball 10 yards deep in his own end zone and returned it 120 yards for a touchdown that seemed to take the wind out of the Mauricie team's sails.

In the second half, North Shore Elites scored three more times while the Mauricie team only managed to gain one first down.
Conrad Luthe stood out amongst the local players with four carries for 42 yards.

Tchad Ayotte was selected the game MVP for the Mauricie team while Philippe Dion was the game MVP for the North Shore Elites.
